Swapping alarm modules

I am trying to swap out alarm modules on my 98 boxster. The problems with the old one included the central locking, some of the dash switches and the top wouldn't come down. Seeing as there had been water under the seat I was pretty sure the module was done after reading some threads.

After installing the used module that i got off eBay, the dash switches and locks work but it won't start and the top still doesn't work. From other threads I thought that even if the key and the module didnt match you could still start the car if you put the key in the ignition after 10 seconds? :barf:

Has anyone had any experience swapping out alarm modules that might give me a clue on what to do next? I was thinking I should maybe cut my losses, install the old alarm module and have the dealer swap it out for a new one but I wanted to check on the forum to see if anyone had successfully swapped in a used alarm module. Also, what did others pay to have this done?

Thanks,
Beez

Maybe I should take a chance with the eBay module..get a tow to the dealer and have them to program a new key?
