Newbie - Just saying hi...
 

Have been reading these forums for a while and am now the proud owner of a 2001 Boxster Tip. Good service history, 74,000 miles, 18" GT2 alloys and LOTS of fun to drive... Just need a nice long spell of really good weather :)
Only one minor issue so far and that's with an engine warning light. Car bought in London and drove 400 miles home and the warning light came on after about 100 miles. I filled up with fuel before I left and wondered if a) It didn't like the fuel I used or b) the fuel cap is slightly dodgy... I'm not too worried (yet) but would appreciate some thoughts.. Is the only way to know to take it to a garage and get the code checked?

Ha, we found the reason for the CEL!!!! :)

Welcome Peter, as long as your fuel cap sealed, gasket good & you twisted it till it clicked 3 times (USA anyway), then the trouble code probably already lit the check engine light before you bought the car & someone reset the light before you bought the car but it will come back until the issue is fixed. If you plan on keeping the car a long time you should buy a scanner to check the computer for trouble codes. Search this forum for more info. :)

Yes, you need to get the problem codes. Invest in a code reader or take it to a garage that can read the CEL codes and let us know what they are. I bet the previous owner/dealer cleared the code(s) just before selling it. Sometimes it takes quite a few miles for some trouble codes to trigger the CEL again.
