No, this is not the same Boxster that's in the shop that won't start. This is the Boxster that I wrapped around a pole. First the damage...

I've got a guy who does body work and owes me a big favor so now I'm going to cash in on it and have hime fix my ride. The only thing is that I have to buy the parts so the first thing I did was type Boxster Bumper into ebay and I saw all these body kits. Some of them looked really hot but what got me was that were cheaper than the OEM parts!

So my first question is: What is the compatibility of Boxster parts? Can I put just any rear Boxster bumper on my 99? Easily? The fact that THESE GUYS are claiming their kits fit on 97-04 models tells me that front fenders, bumper and hood are all interchangeable for any Boxster from 99-04. Am I wrong in thinking this way? Stop me before I start buying 03 door panels and to find out they don't fit.

Second question: What are the names of the back panels behind the doors? I typed in rear fender and got nothing.

Third question: Am I looking in the wrong place for parts? Is there some secret place to find quality Porsche parts for cheap?

Looks like a big project. I'll get you started with #2. Its called a quarter panel.

99 Boxcutter 06-13-2011 02:56 PM

I'll take one with cheese. thx. ;)
So, I just looked up that part and it's like $700!!! Is that my best bet, or is there some after market...?

JTP 06-13-2011 03:24 PM

Like Nefarious said, big project. My recently crashed Boxster isn't nearly as bad and the insurance company totaled it. The only panels damaged was front bumper, driver's side front fender, driver's door, and driver's side quarter panel by the intake. hood was undamaged.
Good luck! Might be cheaper to get a another used one and use this as a parts car.

Yea, but the engine's fine and the labor is essentially free.
This is not up for debate. I'm going to fix the car. I just need to know what parts to buy and where to cut corners.

vvv

Go to ********************************************.com and there you will find a complete parts list with pictures and prices.

if you bought new parts, just the body panels i bet will be 5K+ and that does not include damage that you dont see.

cheaper to by a roller and use that for parts.

good luck

What JHandy said + 1 for sure. Parts alone even on the cheap (if possible) will cost more. Then you have all the bugs to work out and the big question is; will it be stable and straight at high speed. Reconsider your approach. JMHO.

quality Porsche parts for cheap = Oxymoron!

As suggested, Option#1 - buy a parts car with good sheetmetal and transplant it.

Better yet, Option #2 - transfer your mechanicals to the parts car, then let your paint/body guy have at it.

Best yet, Option#3 - Take your car and part it out. It's worth more in parts than it is as a whole car, whatever it's condition. '99 Boxsters aren't worth a lot in good condition, and a patched-up accident victim isn't worth dirt. You'll end up putting about 3 times into it (even with all your free labor) than the Market will ever reward you for.

Cheers!

Completely agree...buy a roller and transplant the drivetrain or part it out. You are wasting money repairing a battered car, when there are so many out there with good bodies and bad mechanicals.

Looks like it's sitting in your back yard?

go here to get a PET: http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/porscheservice/originalparts/originalpartscatalogue/

it has all the parts, part numbers, etc. use sunset imports or suncoast for all OEM parts. i recommend you just buy used doors from a junk shop instead of fixing the old ones. if you type part numbers into google, you will sometimes get aftermarket body parts (fenders, quarters, etc) for cheap.

i don't think it's as bad as it looks. BTW, if you go aftermarket, get polyurethane parts. fiberglass sucks.

ok, so maybe that's the way to go. I can use any parts from 1997-2002 right?

jhandy 06-15-2011 08:52 PM

actually 99-04 uses the same stuff.
find one that has a blown motor. You may find that you can just remove your motor and put it into a new body. Much cheaper and faster.

if you go that route, check concerns with dme and E gas and such, but i think that it can all be worked out easier than you think.

i have seen rollers go from 4K to 9K. mostly on ebay.

99 Boxcutter 06-16-2011 07:39 PM

I heard that wasn't possible from the Porsche dealer. They said the electrical would all have to be rewired. But I am curious if the body panels will all transplant.
I know they updated the Boxster in 2000 and again in 03- but I don't know if that was all under the hood.

email me and I will send you a digital parts catalog that can answer all of your questions.
body panels should be fine to 2004.
What the deal with the drivers wheel? It is turned right, but the passenger side is strait. Looks expensive.
