what does the # on the sides of the engine mean? starts with 996..

While swapping out the spark plugs today, I noticed a 996 xxxxxx number engraved on both sides of the engine near the plugs. Looks like the previous owner might've swapped something. What part is this?

Probably the part number on your valve covers. 986 & 996 share a lot of parts.
