Oil Leak - IMS? RMS? Please help diagnose
1 Attachment(s)
Hi,
Past couple of days my car developed an oil leak. Just a couple of drops a night, centered under the engine. Today I put it on ramps, cleaned the durty area with paper towels, then revved it to 6K and kept it there for about 2 min, It started showing oil on the engine, just to the front and right of rear jacking point. Is it IMS or RMS? should I be worried? Car is 2000 Boxster 2.7L with 76k miles, I change oil every 6 month (~3k miles) with Castrol Syntec 10W40 Image attached. Thanks Sasha |
If you think it IMS or RMS you will have to drop the transmission and flywheel to inspect.

If the RMS or IMS were leaking, the oil would be coming down from the centreline of the engine, right where the tranny bolts on. What you've shown doesn't look like the right area for one of those two to be leaking.

Thanks clickman,
I know the pic is not very clear, car was on ramps and that's the best I could do. I found an image on renntech, of underside.. this is not my image. I circled the part that is shown in my picture. Again this pic is not my engine, it's just a refference to show what is shown in my picture (in the first post) |
Mine has oil in showing in the same areas, but when I pulled the transmission to change the clutch, it was dry as a bone in there. Mine looks like the source is the spark plug tube o-rings. There is a nice, clean area under two of them while the other one is coated with dirt and grime. It looks like the oil is dripping down the side and cleaning off the dirt.
I'm changing my tubes right now so I'll try to remember to post if it takes care of the problem in the next few weeks. |
