How many is too many?
Miles that is?
what is the highest that anyone has here? |
50K so far
Just turned 50,000 miles about a week ago on my '99 Boxster. Hoping to get many more good miles out of it. I bought it used last May. So far about 13,000 trouble free miles. No major issues. The engine seems strong and runs well.

47,000 miles on 99
I have just turned 47,000 miles on my 99. No problems and just do routine maintenance. I plan on keeping this car (unless better than expected finances allow an S upgrade). Years ago I put 167,000 miles on a 1984 Carrera that never required any engine work - and the guy I sold it to is still driving it today. Its not the mileage, its the way the owner takes care of the car.

Plus a bit of luck

obtain print-out of complete service history
If you going to buy a used Porsche from a dealership they can supply you with the complete service history from day one. If they won't, there is a problem.

not sure what would be considered the best response, however from what I have been told by some very savvy Porsche Engineers, after about 125,000 miles is when one might consider replacing the engine.
My 2000 just turned 24,000 miles... I only drive it about half the year. I was also told that for those interested in upgrading their Boxster engnes when the time comes it is possible to modify the engine compartment of Boxster to fit a Carerra 3.4 L engine. |
Just wondering what the price of a new Boxster eingine is. Also the Carrera engine. Is it worth the money to replace an engine?

I dont remember what the quotes were that I was given back a year ago, though I do recall the price difference between a new Boxster engine and a new Carrera engne was only about $1500 different. When you actually think about it if it were to come down to buying teh new engine upgrading to a Carrera engine probably would make sense. It is a significant increase in base HP. instead of the 220 hp on the 2.7 l engine the 3.4, I think, has about 300-320 hp stock. So really it is a better base t start off with for obvious reason.
My feeling is dont bother replacing it unless you absolutly have to. if it ever comes to me wearing away my 2.7 L , then I can see going for the upgrade. |
