help boxster 986 S steering judder knocking wobbling
hi guys
I've searched but can't find anything hopefully someone can help or advise what might be wrong with my car :( basically I'm getting alot of juddering/knocking through the steering wheel, and it seems to get worse the faster I go. I can visibly see my arms shaking with what the steering wheel is doing i.e. it seems to knock/jolt/judder left and right etc in a fast motion possibly in relation to what the wheels/suspension are having to cope with the roads/bumps etc but its making the car undriveable. Steering feedback I expect from a porsche but not to this level!!! I'm running 18" turbo alloys with brand new conti n2's 225 front, 265 rear. I've tried balancing twice, and an alignment when the new tyres were fitted but no good, problem still remains. Have i got a number of bad front suspension/steering components somewhere on the front end which would cause this shimmy? my cars done 60,000 miles and is just over 8 years old. Thanks in advance supermario |
Can you provide a little more info:
Did this problem exist with the old tires? Did it get better or worse once the new tires were fitted? Or did the problem only appear after the new tires were installed? |
Supermario:
Check your upper strut mounts for excessive play or wear, and make sure that the bolts on the top of the strut mounts are correctly torqued. Regards, Maurice. |
Check the front track bars as the rubber link points degrade and become loose over time.
I would then check for steering rack issues at a qualified shop. Any recent work have you done that may have caused this behavior? |
problem was there with old tyres, it got slightly better with new tyres and alignment but it has progressively got worse over the last few weeks.
i took it to my local specialist and they thought it was balancing but after having balancing done a 2nd time its still the same. thanks for help guys really appreciate it |
this is a classic symptom of a bad ball joint or tie rod.
jack up the car. grab a front wheel and twist it side to side & pull it to & fro. one of them will have some play in it. replace the lower control arm or tie rod on that side. |
i have similar issues on my 03S with 52k. i was assuming something was worn out up front. my previous Boxster did not have that shimmy or wobble feel coming through the steering wheel .
