CDR-23 Radio Issues

I have an 03 Boxster S with the CDR-23 Radio with the factory Bose System. Occasionally, it gets rather freaky on me. For instance, it has stopped working on a few occasions, and would not respond to the power on/off button, causing me to think it has died, then the next time I start it up, lo and behold it operates just fine. Today, I stopped the car and turned off the ignition, then removed the key, and it promptly started making popping / clicking noises that were being generated in all of the speakers, including the subwoofer. This went on for at least 5 minutes, before it finally stopped. (During this time I was reading the manual, hoping to find the correct fuse to kill the radio...) Also, the radio was powering up without the key in the ignition, which is clearly not normal. While I was looking through the manual, the noises simply stopped. I drove the car home, making several stops, listening to a CD, with no further problems.

Anyone else ever experienced anything like this? I really hate to go through the expense of changing out the audio system. I've been looking for a solution to allow the unit to accept input from an IPOD/Zune device, but I don't really think I want to invest $450 to add that feature to an old stock radio system. So, I really would love to find out if this is an indication that it's about to die, or if it's just a normal ghost in the machine.

Any input would be gladly received.

Thanks,

Pat

Sounds to me like it could be your ignition switch going south.

Cheers!
