Crazy after 65,000 KM it can be in this bad shape, is this normal?

have you noticed a burning rubber (not oil, not clutch) smell coming brom that back of your car after a drive?

Looks like you just got it in the nick of time.
Assuming its the original, it is very unusual looking for your time and mileage.
Looks more like heat has been its enemy.

I've never noticed any unusual smells

Drive in winter? Road salt is very hard on rubber belts and bushings.

IMHO, age matters as much as mileage, and this applies to all rubber parts...!

If this is (ok, it was...) the original belt, and it has managed to survive 10 years..!

I would say it is very good quality indeed :D

.

It looks to be in the same condition as a couple that I have changed on 97-99 cars. I agree that age does indeed affect the belt.

I find it hard to believe it could be that bad from age. Could hard driving habits have anything to do with it?

AndyA6 04-30-2011 05:44 PM

That belt really looks bad..... I just installed your TT (thanks again for sending it) and my belt from '04 looks absolutely ok, like brandnew, has a Porsche part#. Is/was yours OEM?

Your driving habits won't make a difference.

violametallic-S- 04-30-2011 06:35 PM

Hey Andy. How long did it take you to change the pulley?

WhipE350 04-30-2011 06:36 PM

Holy cracked belt!! I changed mine at 54k miles (2000 'S') and it was like new...almost didn't bother putting the new belt on because it was so tight I was worried it would cause water pump issues. That's amazing. Maybe certain years used different OE providers.

About an hour I'd say, really didn't look at the time...
