One-Sided Parking Lights

What kind of strain does having the directional parking lights have on the battery? I guess another way to reword that question is, what's its purpose? Those of you on the other side of the pond from the US may know better, seeing as how they're used there more.

For example...
Do you turn them for a short period, when you're double parked or something?
Do you turn them on for a longer period of time, perhaps dinner, a party, a movie?
Or can it handle an overnight adventure?

I'm quite curious so any info anyone has would be appreciated.
