LA Dismantlers on Nat Geo

Nat Geo is doing a documentary on LA Dismantlers and it will air on May 12. I saw this on their website. Today I received a postcard from LAD trumpeting the show. It says the show will be aired at 7 & 10pm. I suppose that's CDT as that's what time NG's premiere shows start here. Interesting that they sent me a card. Wonder how I got on their list (obviously there are several ways)? I haven't purchased anything from them. Anyone else get the postcard?

Anyway, should be an entertaining show. Thought I'd pass this info on to other Porsche enthusiasts.

Don't know how, but I got the postcard too.

Great photo...glad it's spring somewhere...

I go the card too. Panorama also had the page on it.

I bought my motor from them. I guess that is how I got on the list.

That postcard was in my mail today here in Idaho.

From the Nat Geo website:
'Now, the teams have three new Porches to tackle...'

You would think they could spell the name correctly.

Bet prices go up.

I also got the postcard yesterday, but don't know where they got my info. I will set the DVR.
Great idea to notify anyone who didn't get the postcard!

Has anyone actually purchased anything from them lately? Last I checked on Ebay they had a very mixed feedback record.

Cloudsurfer 05-10-2011 03:30 PM

I've tried buying things from them in the past, and every time I ask about something, they give me a quote for the used part that is 75% or more of the new part, so I always just tell them "thanks but no thanks." Further, I've heard (and take that for exactly what it is), that they don't exactly run an honorable business, especially with respect to major mechanical parts (like motors).

Any idea what the disclaimer was a the beginning of the show saying Porsche was suing LAPD?

i thought at first you meant the LA Police. i imagine it's over the domain 911pcar, but it could just be over the use of the word porsche or their tag line "Porsche's Salvage Yard" or their telephone number 818-porsche...

i couldn't find anything on google so it's all just speculation on my part.

I noticed many of the workers had the logos on the back of their tee shirts blurred out. I wonder if LAPD has reproduced the Porsche logo on their tee shirts w/o permission?

That episode made me cry...

i tuned in about half way...

i heard the part "a boxster with a blown engine (the white one)" and then it went to commercial (of course)... lol.. all I could think was "IMS?"

That one black 993 that was all custom was pretty badass, and that rebuilt aircooled -6 looked sick.

Anyone notice the 914 on the "race day" part??? It made me smile!

I purchased my 3.4 liter, brakes, bumpers, and a lot of miscellaneous stuff. The first engine they sent me had compression leak, but they quickly replaced it and with a little patience got a great motor with only 18k on it. A lot of times they have customers waiting for parts and engines, so you have to be a little patient with the big stuff. It helps that I work only a few miles away from them too, so stopping by to pick up a part works great for me.

I too have heard about some shady business, but I have gotten to know the owner fairly well and he is a nice guy that is really working hard juggling 1000's of parts and phone calls. So a few slip through the cracks, but that is business and happens to all companies growing so fast.

There are a lot of shady customers out there too, so any complaints on forums are not always truthful and sharing both sides of the story. I have heard stories of customers trying to steal or keep very expensive parts by making bogus claims as well.

I can only speak for myself and my experience has been really great with them. If they get to know you, they really go out of their way to try and find what you need and help you out.

Over all I thought it was a fun show to watch. Although I have to say... I know there were a few story plots that were set up just to make things fun and interesting too... that's tv for ya :)

Shoot ! I missed it. My wife and I were watching Star Trek TNG marathon all night. I guess I'll have to catch one of the umteen million reruns.
