Removing the whole Soft top

There's another forum showing how to remove the soft top if u want to repair it.And it seems straight foward on removing/installing the whole unit back on,which i think its in service postion. My question is ,can i leave the softtop off and put it into open/close mode so the light goes out on dash.Or well this put the alignment out from when i took it off for reinstalling it at a later time.Or is it just a button mechishism when the arms of the softtop hit it ,it tells the computer the soft top is closed/open.I'am using a hard top so no need for soft top until i sell the car few years for now. Thanks.
