Bought a pair of these from the same guy listing them on Ebay... but I wonder if they are the same price if I ordered them from the parts counter?

When I first got my boxster a few months ago, a friend was telling me about those cupholders. The first versions were all plastic and prone to breakage. Later versions have some sort of metal reinforcement. I think he told me they were $50 each from the Porsche dealer. I settled on the a set from www.ultimatecupholders.com. I'm pretty much restricted to 12oz can when I use the cupholder on my side - my right leg hits anything bigger. If I don't have a passenger I can have a bigger drink because I use the drink holder on the passenger side of the center console. Cupholders are a big decision when driving a Boxster.

When the Boxster first came to the US the car had a pair of that style cupholder that clips to the vent as standard equipment. They were removed from cars by the dealers. They are shown in the 1997 owners manual. The 1998 owners manual had a slip of paper that said they were being redesigned and owners would be given then new design. Never happened.

When I started out in 1999 you had to buy that style from Germany, as they were not available in the US. A friend in Germany got me the drivers side 6 years ago. Then around 2000 PCNA started selling the original design over the parts counter. Always pissed me off because they were supposed to be standard equipment. I never used the one I have.

Cupholder trivia.

These are not flimsy... so they did redesign them into more sturdy units. I will work hard to treat them with respect ... too costly to stress-test!

Jeff, your story sounds a lot like the 987 brochure that states that auto climate control is STANDARD in every boxster, not a special order item. I read though that all the 987 owners here had to specify they wanted it...

Porsche seems to flip-flop all the time on some very important things.
