Thumbs up First Place

Hey I saw your post over at PPBB about this, congrats! Also saw the response from one of the deputies, gee how infantile. Great looking car in any case Ken and a well deserved award.

Thanks

Thanks for the congrats, I am using Zaino products for the finish but believe it or not, it has been about a month since I "Zaino'd" the car, I just didn't have time this time to do it again before the show which I think is a testament to how well their stuff lasts.

Zaino

Do you apply it with a Porter Cable polisher which I have read good things about or by hand?

By Hand

I do it by hand, I'm always worried that a piece of dirt/sand, whatever will get underneath a polisher and leave a scratch or something. I've heard too many horror stories so I just do it by hand. The stuff goes on and comes off so easily that by hand is fine.

Thumbs up RE: By Hand

Thanks Ken. I have always waxed my cars by hand and I guess I will continue to do so with the Boxster too. Haven't used Zaino yet, in fact I haven't waxed mine in the 5-6 months I have had it. Water still beads on it, so I imagine it is still pretty well protected. But, plan to wax it before the rains come in any case.

I have found P21S wax works fairly well. However, I do believe Zaino's products are superior.

I had a friend's 2002 Carrera over at my house this past weekend and was rather shocked in the "water beading" ability of his un-waxed car. It must be the quality of Porsche's paint/finish.

Water beading

The water beading capabilities of Zaino are extraordinary! Very very fine beads, and the surface maintains that "slick" smooth feel for several months, unlike most waxes which lose that feel in a couple of days...

What specific Zaino products are you using? I spoke with Sol Zaino a couple of months ago, and he recommended abround 5 or 6 products for my car (lapis blue (very dark)). He was a riot -- very open with regard to "available products."

I guess I need to place an orger with him.

Zaino...

I used the Z1 as prep, which is fine on my car, yellow, no deep scratches, and then several coats of Z2 over time. I've heard that if you have deep scratches you should go with some Z5, but I thought you were always supposed to finish with Z2 for the best shine. Their website www.zainobros.com explains it all. It is rather cumbersome to order from them, no online ordering system you have to print stuff out and fax it to them. If you are going to get some let me know, I have a couple of local people interested and maybe we could do a group buy...

The 'avatar' picture at left is of my Lapis Blue '01 just after the first Zaino treatment this past spring. Other than using their car wash (which contains finish/shine enhancing components) it has had no other products applied and still looks great. I avoid using the car wash product on the glass and top (use P21S instead there), as I don't want to "wax" those areas... does anyone have experience with just using the Zaino wash on everything?

Added to this posting on 20 Oct 02: if interested, additional full-size pictures of this car w/Zaino applied appear in another thread: http://www.986forum.com/showthread.php?threadid=86http://www.986forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86 . BTW, I just freshened the car up with the Z6 "Gloss Enhancer" (detailing spray) yesterday and it only looks better now... still have yet to apply the recommended second coat of Z-2.

Zaino Wash

I haven't used their wash products, but considering I wash by hand, I just don't wipe down the top with the same sponge, etc.

I'm still interested in a Zaino group buy if others are. Has this moved forward any?

I believe, regardless of what top shampoo one uses, the key component to keeping the top water-resitant is to apply a post cleaner protectant. I am using RaggTop. You just spray it on and let it sit in the sun (if available). The product does not contain silicone, but contains various polymers designed to repel water and strenghten the top's material. If you get it on paint or glass, just wipe it off before it dries.

Ken,
I am most interested in purchasing some Zaino products. Is anyone elce interested?
