Odometer Reading on my Brand New 987
 

I picked up my brand new 987 at the dealer this evening (very excited). One thing sort of irritated me, however. My first stop was the business office where I paid for the car and signed some paper work. The paperwork said the car had 20 miles on it. Then the salesman takes me out to the car and the odometer reads 52 miles. Not the end of the world, and I didn't make a big deal out of it, but it did irritate me a bit. I asked about it but didn't get much of an answer. He said the "it's normal," that "they drive a Porsche as soon as it leaves the factory and you never get one with less than this many miles on it," and that the "girl in the front office" just puts "20" on all the paperwork for all the cars, blah blah blah. Anyway, I love the car and I'm not going to get too excited by this but wondering what others think.

Did you order it or was it one that was already on the lot? I received mine with 17 miles on it total. If yours was on the lot, I would expect it to have a few more miles than that. Surprised they weren't a bit more fastidious about the paperwork though.

It was on the lot. And I suppose that they did have to drive it somewhere to get the registration and state inspection. I just thought it wasn't so honest of them to have me sign something that said 20 miles and then, 5 minutes later, present me with a car that had over 50 miles on it. Life is short, however, and I'm not really upset about it. What the heck, as long as they kept it under 4100 RPM they got me that much closer to the end of the break-in period!

Only problem is if those miles came from test drives, but even so, a few rips up to 7000 RPM during the first few miles isn't going to kill the car or screw up the break-in period--I wouldn't worry about it at all. Enjoy the car! What all did you get?

Thanks. The car is the basic Boxster and has heated seats, stereo upgrade, the larger wheels, auto climate control. Black matallic paint. I paid about $5k off the MSRP. My first Porsche (and my first any type of sports car) and I am totally happy to be driving it. Of course, rain is in the forecast for the foreseeable future here in the NY area . . . .

He probably didn't want to tell you about the new young salesman that had to try it out with numerous burnouts and 0-60 sprints when the engine was ice cold. I kid I kid. :)

I think your new car warrantee will be 32 miles less than it should. The warrantee period normally starts at the documented mileage at delivery.

I see you're in NY. Can you tell us the name of the dealer?

I read another post, either here or on Porsche Pete's which said that you should examine the car thoroughly first before signing anything. If I examined the car and then was confronted with a title with 32 miles less, I would dispute it. However, I, too, have heard that such mileage is not unusual since Porsche does road-test the cars more than other makes.

Anyway, if it's after the fact, I would ignore it by going out and driving. Enjoy!

Not the battle to engage in. Like the others first I want to welcome you to our group and to have a wonderful time with the car. Secondly I would not worry about the discrepency with the miles. Porsche as well as other dealers I've bought cars from test the cars. VW, Audi I always received the cars with over 50 miles. You have a great new car so put this issue deep in the cellar because it is not that important. :cheers:
