Wondering if anyone has heard anything solid about this new Generation Boxster supposedly coming this year.

I'm hearing 4 cylinder 270hp on the base model and with some shaved weight. I wonder how it will sound, not sure I've been in a 4 banger that ever sounded the way I like, though I haven't been in one in years.

2012 Boxster
I am hoping for 6 cylinder with about 270 horsepower with DFI. I might just buy it. Wish there was some good solid info available. Bet there will be some good pricing on the 2011's.

Whip, I have to say IMO, the 944 exhaust had no snarl. However, regarding all 4 bangers, the Fiat 124 sounds bad ass...

Ya like I said been a while. What was the displacement of the 944, I just loved those cars back in the 80s, I was fresh out of college and couldn't afford one, got a used 83 Mazda RX7 loved it.

944's were 2.5. The S2 were 3.0

At the time of introduction, the 2.5 / 4 was the largest displacement 4 cyl engine in a production car. The motor used belt driven counter balance shafts and was a valve interference engine as well. Many mistakenly say it's half of a 928 V8, the reason they get that impression is the commonality of some parts and design. It took a while to wind up but that car was incredible, it handled impeccably.

No it wasn't but it was really quite good. I'll tell you what Kurt, I'll bet a driver like Michael Andretti could dog the bejesus out of you in the boxter with a 944.

Rumor is a 2.0 turbo from audi is supposed to b the engine
Its their 4 cylinder turbo they use in the Audi TT
I don't know what to think of that....

Good point. I drive a car with a slightly modified 1.8T and it makes the base boxsters that I have driven feel feel slow. I have yet to drive an S model. But I would say it would be comparable in speed to my car. I love this motor (1.8T) but I do not want one in a boxster. I want a flat six. Lower center of gravity and the sound. A boxster without the growl of the flat six behind you just would not be a proper boxster.

interesting read, ekam. The car's gone from looking very Carerra GT in style in the 987 to looking very 918 spyder in the 2012, at least in the front end appearance.

All of them I ever saw at the track were stupid fast for 20 laps and retarded unreliable.
Don't get me wrong, I had a 924 Turbo when they first came out. I loved to drive that car, but it spent so much time at the Houston dealer, I let them keep it.
They were quite well balanced but the opposite polar moment from a Boxster. All the weight was split at the two ends. I prefer all the weight in the middle with a low polar moment that lets you hang the car out easily and catch it easily, at the angle you want.
A 944 was probably easier to drive at 80% but much harder to drive at 99%.

they are all rumors at this point. VW is calling the shots we will see if the 356 / baby boxster happens at all. I heard it is to be built on the vw bluesport chassis with a porsche built flat 4 .
