What To Replace While Engine/Trans Out
Planning on having the IMS changed on a 98 Boxster with tiptronic, 26kmiles. Have been told that engine/trans have to come out to do so. Figured I'd change these parts at the same time:
underdrive pulley for ps water pump low temp thermostat AO separator spark plugs/tubes after market exhaust Any suggestions as to what else may be good to change out at this time? Thanks, Rob C. |
RMS, trans fluid and service, motor mount.

Check the wiring to the cam position sensors, it can chafe and wear through. May not need to replace, just add another layer of protection with a high-temp wire loom like this: wire loom.
Coolant expansion tank. Replace if yours has yellowed. As the color changes due to age/heat/chemical exposure the tank weakens and is more likely to crack. |
With your other mods you may want to update to a Caymen motor mount.
|
Good suggestions! I had thought about the motor mount but didn't know which one to choose. Stock or something like Pedros Garage. Any thoughts?
Forgot about the coolant tank, glad I asked for input. Will research the wiring, didn't know about that one. Thanks all. |
If I read your question correctly, the shop wants to drop both the transmission and engine for an LN IMS retrofit. While the transmission must come out, the IMS is replaced with the engine still in the car. Doing otherwise is going to add a lot of unnecessary cost to the procedure.

Yes, this is what I have been told because it is a Tiptronic trans.

Engine doesn't need to come out for any of that stuff. Get the LNE IMS retrofit rather than the Porsche IMS.
The shop will have to remove the chain tensioners, so you might want to replace those. |
The chain tensioners don't have to be touched to install the IMS bearing.
But they do need to be locked into position before removing the old IMS assembly. |
Yes, I was going to do the LNE IMS kit as that seems to be the best choice.
