IMS bering problem
 

i understand that this bering in the IM shaft is cause of major engine failures. i get little to no help from the dealer who says the cost to replace is 2K BIG JOB!!
any ideas on this from those who have experienced this problem.

it's about a six hour job if you are taking your time. Two hour to pull out the transmission, two hours to extract the old bearing and replace it with the new LN engineering unit, two hours to put all back together, put in new engine oil, check everything.

My non-dealer Porsche speicalist charges about $90 an hour for labor. So for a IMS upgrade it will be about $540 on labor and another $600 in parts, or $1200 total with tax. Any Porsche specialist can do this job it's pretty straightforward. Some guys have even done it by themselves without a lift working in their garage for a few days. Since you're going to pay for six hours of labor most people change the clutch ($600) and maybe replace the axle boots (at least 2 hours labor) which are often torn on high mileage cars. I did all of the above and also decided to play it safe by replacing the flywheel ($600), the old flywheel had burns on it from waiting too long to change the clutch.

Check with your local Porsche Club maybe there is an independent specialist they all use. Surely he's done this job by now.

p.s.
$1200 for an IMS is not a lot of money if you put if you happen to be the unlucky one in a 50 or 100 that has to go looking for a $10,000 engine.

is there an actual problem with your IMS?

there are retrofit kits available from LN engineering. they are much better than stock & can be installed with the engine in the car.

that having been said, the kits are quite expensive, and the labor involves removing the transmission, clutch & flywheel. $2,000 for the job sounds fair.

i would combine this with a clutch & rear main seal, since all require removal of the transmission.

IIRC Jake Raby at FlatSixInnovations in Georgia won't do the job w/o the clutch replacement.

I'd do it (planned) as a preventive measure before spending money on hp upgrades or body kits.

Who said anything about Alaska?

Seriously, the labor, IMS BEARING itself, RMS seal, and a clutch should be high teens, so $2000 isn't far off.

Don't worry ftor, Juneau he was just kidding. Couldn't help myself.... :rolleyes: . Like Perfectlap I did mine myself due to particular circumstances, if I had a local shop who I trusted I would of considered $2000 Fairbanks kind of money. I'd take them up on it while Ketchikan. Ok, I'm done.
