Any Modification Ideas?

I am looking for some modifications that i can do to my Boxster. I am not really lookin for performance mods. I just want to make my Boxster stand out from the rest. Some Do it your Self type stuff, or at a low cost. Anyone have some mods that they have done to make there Boxster stand out from the rest?

Paint the roll hoops silver? Carbon side intake covers? That's what I've done :) Front grill covers are a nice touch as well. Makes the openings looks bigger...

I've owned my '01 Boxster since December. Since that time I've added/changed:

1. 18" Gemballa Competition wheels & new tires
2. Shaved the Boxster emblem from the trunk
3. Swapped the Boxster muffler for the Boxster S muffler
4. Done the intermittent wiper hack
5. Done the rear spoiler dash switch hack
6. rear speakers
7. factory 6ch amp from a 996
8. CDC-3 6-disc changer from a 996
9. Bumper plugs
10. Clear headlight corners
11. Clear side markers
12. 550 red tail lights
13. Aluminum guage rings
14. Removed the air bag stickers
15. Washed and waxed it a million times

Maybe next year I'll try some performance mods (after my checkbook quits smoking)

B&M short shift kit. Best improvement for the buck!

Hey Thumper - pretty cool stuff youve done!

How easy is it to remove the emblem from the rear trunk lid? Can you give us a brief on that?

Thanks

Thumper 04-19-2005 12:20 PM

I just took fishing line and sawed it right off. I got the idea from here if I remember right. The remaining adhesive was a bit of a chore to peel off, but not too bad. I used some bug & tar remover to remove the last traces of adhesive and then washed and waxed it. Can't tell it was ever there.

Dental Floss is actually a little kinder on your paint than fishing wire.
I removed my "Boxster" logo with a "986" logo.
I'll have to post a pic of it soon, I know a lot of people have been asking for someone to post a pick of a "986" logo....

Thumper 04-19-2005 09:05 PM

The fishing line never touched my paint. But I do like the idea of dental floss.

Depending on how long the decal has been on, the adhesive can be a real pain to remove. Goo gone works but it has to be left on quite a long time and it is a mess!

A hair dryer helps make the goo gone work more quickly.

Thumper 04-20-2005 06:58 AM

Yeah, I tried goo gone since it works so well on most all sticker adhesive, but it was taking too long for me when I did my emblemectomy. The bug and tar remover seemed to work much faster, but that was after I had been trying the goo gone. Maybe the two together is what sped things up...beats me. It sure is easier to wash and wax without that emblem.

And, the removed emblem looks cool hanging on the garage wall!

I replaced my Silver BoxsterS badge with a chrome one from the 2004 550 edition BoxsterS.
That and the clear tail lights gave it a much cleaner/high end look.
Well worth the $180.

A guy down the block has a silver 911 Cab and from the back they look kinda similar.
I also added the plastic chrome-like grill strips from Ebay for $30. Its really door edge protector strips like the kind you get a Pepboys, cut to fit the grills. A little bit of a mark up but a nice improvement. Stock Looks kind of unfinished to me

and I got one of these for $5 on ebay too (best bang for the buck!)

Try painting the center caps yourself with model paint and then cover with clear lacquer.

Thumper 04-20-2005 07:56 AM

I picked up one of those license plate surrounds too. I really like the understated Porsche on it. You have to look at it just right to see it. I also picked up the Porsche sticker (same font as the license surround) and put it on my wind deflecter. I wasn't real sure about doing that mod, but it looked pretty good afterwards.

I just picked up a similar license plate surround that says "Gemballa" that I'm going to change to. But now that I have it, I'm thinking that the only ones that will know what the heck that is, is other Porsche owners....but I guess that's ok.

I'm wanting all of my mods to be either invisible or very understated. Something like you wouldn't know they had been done if you didn't really know what a regular boxster looked like. So far, so good.

Mine already came with the painted center caps, or I would have painted them too. Plus, the colors look really good with a Guards Red Boxster.

I had my airbox perforated. I kept seeing people posting about dismal results with aftermarket intakes, so during the 60k miles service, I had the shop perforate the airbox and drop in a K&N. Sounds AWESOME...she howls above 4000rpm...and when I sit at idle, you can hear the air sucking into the vent on the drivers side...pretty sweet.

Here you go, "986" badge, strosec rear wing, all red tails, and custom painted headlights for that classic Porsche look.

Sorry the pics are a bit fuzzy, I'll take better ones next time I take the car out.

edit: upded with better pics.

Thumper 04-21-2005 08:45 PM

tqtran, the 986 looks great! I really like your rear spoiler too. What brand is it? I've been looking for a spoiler like that. Do you also have the all red 550 edition tail lights? I'd love to see a pic of the whole car, front, side and rear. Thanks for posting pics.

tqtran 04-22-2005 05:39 AM

Its a Strosec "Turbo" style rear wing. It looks bad ass when its up, looks like the 996 turbo
And yes, I do have the 50th ann edt. all red tails, I like them the best.
I will take some more pics as soon as it gets nice out (they say its suppose to snow this weekend here in Indiana.....)

limoncello 04-22-2005 07:43 AM

Thumper, how'd you do the rear speakers? Did you get the Porsche speakers or other? Location? thanks!

Thumper 04-22-2005 09:24 AM

I got the rear speaker kit from PnP that they sell on eBay. It's their upgraded kit which is basically the same as the factory kit, but with coaxial speakers. You must have the rear storage unit in order to install them. It was pretty easy to put in. The only hassle was feeding the wiring from the rear of the car to the front. But it's a clean install that looks absolutely factory.

porscheguy05 04-22-2005 01:21 PM

I have seen the 986 badge before, and really like the looks of it, but have never seen them for sale. Where can I order one of these from?

tqtran 04-22-2005 07:27 PM

You go to the Porsche deal and buy a "968" badge and swap the "6" and the "8" around :D
