Symptoms of AOS?

What are the symtoms for a bad AOS? Does it fail over time or does it just fail immediately?

thanks

my car's AOS came on light turning a light switch. maybe there were tell tail sign but I was not aware of it.
sharp right turn on a freeway on ramp started a white smoke like crop duster.
50+ feet high with equal width.
thought the head gasket blew.
01 boxster 5 speed (non-S)

sb01box-

kinda sounds like what happened to me. going from a stoplight i saw a cloud of smoke. i thought it was the bus next to me but it wasn't. i kept going and it got better...then, in less than a mile it got worse. the cel came on and the engine turned off. luckily, it was just before i got on the freeway. i coasted to a strip mall and parked. i noticed that there was oil coming out of the tailpipe.

what did it cost to repair your box? did you have to change out the O2 sensors?

Mine started making a squealing sound while at idle anytime else was silent. almost sounded like when a car is low on power steering fluid. $300 later at the dealer turned out to be the AOS.

no O2 sensor replacement. oil came out of the drain opening at the air filter box but none from the exhaust.
total of 1-1/2 quarts went up in smoke.
cost was with 90K service and keyfob. 2200 at local dealer. don't recall the breakdown but about 400 for AOS I think.

Mine started with running a little rough during cold start which progressed on each start. Ran fine once the engine was warm. Then periodic smoke at start up. If I drove the car hard you would see a cloud of smoke behind you.

The most common failures are, white smoke coming out the exhaust and the engine running rough from the oil or the engine front will have a squeal coming out of the seal around the front of the crankshaft and this is usually is after the engine has warmed up. Also, you cannot easily remove the oil filler cap when the engine is running. A new AOS comes with the seal and boot for about $115. It takes about 2 hours. Failure of this part is common. I replaced mine and the top J-tube, left the bottom as is. Search here for AOS repair...there is one that goes step-by-step. also, here is Mike's DIY.

Just got the call. O2's need to be replaced...pricey! I'll keep you informed. Now I'm a little paranoid. My wife's '02S had some smoke at start up. It only has 30k miles. hmmmm

They are attributing the smoke to the O2 sensors alone, then?

Got her back Thursday.
AOS
new plugs
4 O2 sensors
(MAF not needed)
$2k

Glad to have her back. My advice: If you suspect that your AOS is failing, get it changed out. You could save yourself $1200 in O2 sensors. Just my 2 cents. ; )
