Looking @ a 2002 Boxster
Hey guys,
Im looking at purchasing a 2002 986 non "S" model. The car has 64k (km) and is in flawless condition. What sort of things should I look out for and what is the general consensus on this model year? I have done some research and it seems the 2000+ models are much less problem prone. TIA |
99, 00, 01 and 02. I believe the 03 is when they changed IMS bearing design and began having a problem. The TIP's seem to be less prone too. You will need a 60K service done, which can cost $1200-$2000 depending what all is done. At a Porsche Indy shop will save a lot of money. Just be sure they have a good reputation. Have a Porsche dealer do a PI, cost is about $120 and you will know where you stand.

They changed the IMS design for 2001.
I would say get a good PPI, and make sure the previous owner took care of it with regular oil changes and service. Besides that there isn't anything too specific to look for. If it passes the PPI and is in good condition, I would go for it! |
Invest a little in a PPI.
It will make your decision a lot easier and could save you a TON of money. An '02S is a good car., Happy Boxstering, Pedro |
02 nonS Boxster
nick,
you've probably heard or researched the Boxster for quite sometime now.. you sure are in the right place for this.. have you read Mike Focke's articles about buying/owning and maintaining a Boxster yet? I'm not sure how keen you are in spotting really straight and a well maintained sports car yet? or since you're looking at an 02, depending on your budget, you're not too far from a big jump to an 03' which has quite an improvement not just on the glass rear window(not plastic) , but on some of the subtle improvements... (might be worth considering).. either way if you do your homework and a good PPI done, you should be good.. good luck..neighbour! |
