Hello and some advice please
Hi from a newbie, I bought a very tidy year 2000 Boxster S a couple of weeks ago and it is going well although I do have a couple of things to sort and I am looking for some advice...
The previous owner, a retired teacher who cherished the car, told me he had experienced a couple of minor problems in the past, a minor oil leak and creaking from front ARB. He only did 3000 miles a year, I've done 500 in the last two weeks and the creaking ARB / front OS suspension is becoming annoying and tghis morning I found a bit of oil on the garage floor (first time) and leaking a bit last night (onto a newspaper). I visited the previous owner to collect my hardtop today and he said he managed to cure the creaking previously with some grease and the oil leak just went away. I took some pics this morning and identified tow leak areas - one in the centre and one which is on / around the right hand cam cover (possibly the plug liner / or ring?) Should I worry about the oil leaks - the electronic gauge doesn't show any loss and the dip stick seems to show the max? Is it worth me trying to sort the creaking or should I get it looked at by a mechanic - I have invested in the Bentley's workshop guide, but I don't know Porsches and I didn't plan on doing any DIY on this car. Some pics of the leaks... Pics below all comments suggestions welcome - should I worry / stop using the car / rush into a dealer? Almost all Boxsters will have some minor oil loss ie. enough to lightly moisten some area of undercarriage. Check electronic and manually check dipstick weekly until you know what if any loss you are looking at...likely it is minor based on your saying you don't see any change in dipstick. And check garage floor as you are doing as an extra monitor. If more than 1/2 liter per 1500km or 1000 miles, might want to consider getting it looked at.

Thats the RMS and cam cover leak. very common. the RMS should be fixed, and do the clutch and IMS upgrade from LN Engineering at the same time.
About 2000$ for all of this. If you dont do it all, you will be very sorry, as the labor is the majority of the expense and you will want / need to do it anyway in the future. the creaking suspension is also common. If you are not a DIY person, then you can let the creaking go for now. If you want to fix it yourself, then try vertex auto for OE arms at a huge cost savings. search for the following and read as much as you can. IMS, RMS, http://flat6innovations.com/. |
Thanks for the comments guys, I will have to find a local specialist here in Aberdeen. How much does the IMS kit cost? I have an office in Texas and will be there in a couple of weeks so could possibly get it sent there...
