Plastic rear window repair?

I have recently discovered a crack/tear in my rear window. It's about 2 inches long. Is there any kit or way to repair it before it gets progressively larger?

I would hate to have to replace the entire top because of this.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Window is replaceable. About $300 for new one, installed. Takes a full day for car to be at the shop.

I know of no way to repair a tear like this.

Plastic Tear

I had an '89 911 convertible once that developed a similar tear in the plastic window. I used one of these good quality transparent plastic patches you can find in Notion stores, or elsewhere. I did one on the inside and an identical one on the inside. It stood the test of time.

An anecdote, I took it to a top shop in Boston to get an estimate for replacing the top. You will never believe the advice I got. The owner said : "Look take the car, make the tear worse, park it in town somewher and claim to the insurance that it was vandalism. That way it will cost nothin' to fix."

Thanks, but the transparent plastic patches worked just fine.

That repair guy never heard of a deductable?

Yeah, I actually think someone DID vandalize it. Looks like they punched a key or similar object through it. There is another indentation farther up, where it didn't penetrate.

I'm also in Boston, where the weather still isn't particularly warm, so there is a small chance it cracked on it's own, though I find it odd.

Brucelee, is the $300 replacement you mentioned at the dealership?

I have patched it with the thick, highly adhesive, clear weatherstrip tape made by Frost King. Looks like crap on an otherwise perfect car.. *SIGH*

Has anyone even used a plastic repair kit? The kind that "welds" the torn parts together? Searching the 'net for a solution.

Wow $300 just for the plastic window?
Cabrio world has the whole top with window for $470-$530
