cold start up prob, help! : )

When the car is cold and I turn the key then the engine begins to turn but fails to catch after 3-5 seconds and then nothing happens. I take my key out and put it back in after a few seconds and then the engine will turn for 15 seconds, progressively getting closer to catching until it finally does.

I'm trying to find a good independent porsche mechanic in my area (Provo, UT) but not much luck so far.

Was told it may be a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Is there any way to check that at home?
