CAM problem

My check engine light has come on three times over the last few months each time reporting a code relating to the CAMs - I'm not overly technical so don't know the specifics. Is this a common problem on 1999 Boxsters? I'm quoted around $1600 for a new CAM + oil change + labor. Just wondering if others have had issues with their CAM.

What the Hell do they mean when they say "CAM"? I've been working on Porsches for over thirty years and never heard anyone knowledgeable describe a problem as "CAM"............did they mean Vario Cam units, Cam position sensors, camshafts, or what? Got any code readouts?

RE: CAM Problem

Sorry, to clarify, problem with the CAM shaft. I don't know what the code is.

we need a code to help

Many auto parts stores will read OBD-II codes for free. Write down the code(s) and post them here.

RE: CAM problem

It took a while to get the code. The CEL # is 174. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

If you had the specific P code it would be a little easier, but he Porsche Fault Code 174 is for camshaft adjustment on the passenger side bank (1-3).

I retract that previous statement, all 3 p codes are the same, so your cam position sensor is out, or if the car runs like a dog, your cam(s) has (have) jumped timing somehow.

Can also be a tensioner gone bad, a Vario Can unit, and/or the cam position sensor. None are particularly hard, but may require both special tooling and knowledge. Couple hours shop time at most.........
