DE@VIR What to expect?
I've signed up for a DE at VIR. I'm in the "Intro", so we've only got 1hr classroom + 1hr track time. I've done lots of AX, and my car is set up well. I know a fella with a 99 996 (all stock) and he says he can easily break 140 on the longest straight. I can't wait!

I did my first DE last October and I learned that it was harder than it looked - at least for me. It seemed to take a long time to get comfortable on the track and I never got going as fast as I thought I would. It was raining in the afternoon and they require you to keep your windows open. So, the rain pouring in on my leg may have had something to do with it.
My most vivid memory is of an uphill run that makes it difficult to see what is up ahead on the track. I kept thinking there would be someone stopped where I couldn't see them. I may have become overcautious after a while, but that was better than getting into a situation I couldn't handle. You are required to have your car inspected prior to the event and they check the torque on your wheel bolts before you can go onto the track. They take safety seriously - a mindset I fully support. Make sure you get an instructor to ride with you. Through a series of miscommunications, I did not have an instructor on my first run and it slowed my learning. Overall, I thought it was a good experience and I'm planning to do it again. Enjoy yourself. |
