18" Carrera Wheel Weights

I just got myself a set of the above to replace the Sports Classic IIs. I've always been hearing these are light weight wheels so I took some measurements.

Front 18x7.5 - 24.4lbs
Rear 18x9 - 26.5lbs

Not exactly light as the front would usually need to be about 20lbs to be considered light weight. That's how much the Volk Racing ones (TE37) weighs. But anyway, those cost much more. More importantly, cleaning my wheels just got a lot easier :)

I got these brand new for £875 (~US$1,650) which is pretty reasonable in my opinion. Shipping is extra. For those who're interested, you can check out www.essentialstyling.com. I don't think the wheels're listed as the owner (Simon@essentialstyling.com) posted this deal on the UK Boxster board.

Now for me to find out how much those Sports Classic II weigh....

Please post some pix when you get them mounted on your car.

Good luck with them!

Some pics of the wheels..... and yes, I re-sprayed the calipers to match my car. Love the looks of yellow calipers which normally signifies ceramic brakes :)

Nice look! What type paint did you use on the calipers? Standard body paint or other?

Standard out-of-the-can high temp yellow paint. YHT is the brand I think...

You will need to get a paint shop to spray a layer of lacquer over it though else the color will be matt instead of glossy. I got the paint shop to do everything for me...

Sweet, nice job all 'round!

I wonder how they compare in weight to the 18" turbo twists or sport conti's. Light weight can be relative term. :)

That's interesting info on the wheel weights.

I spoke to WheelEnhancement.com and requested wheel weights for the folowing
BBS RS-GT
Kinesis K28
and the Carreras

They said they were all within a pound of each other at 21 pounds.

I was surprised because I thought the Kinesis and the BBS RS-GT would be much heavier than the Carreras.

Anyhoo, I purchased the Carreras for $1930 delivered. I already received my Toyo Proxes RA-1 from Frisby Tire for just under $1000. I'm waiting on the front wheels which should be arriving today.

I also got a hold of OEM GT3 front bumper, skirting(fiberglass) and two GT3 seats(boxster red) for $3,100 but I'm going to killed on the shipping.

clubhead how are you weighing the wheels?

I just took one of teh 18x9" rears out of its box and its 21 pounds.
I stood on the scale noted my weight and got back on the scale holding
the rear wheel over my head.

Now that's the larger rear wheel so the front wheel must weigh about 20 pounds.

Lux 04-26-2005 05:49 PM

Yeah, I've also seen somewhere that they were 21'ish lbs. If I recall correctly, they're supposed to be 8 lbs lighter apiece from the turbo twists?

Strange.... That's how I did mine, except I just carried them in front of my stomach instead of over my head. Doubt that would've made any difference. My reading was in kilos and I did a conversion to lbs...

Damn, there shouldn't be that significant a difference between mine and yours :(

FUHRIUS 05-02-2005 08:33 AM

mine were 21-ish also

I did the same bathroom scale method and ended up with approx 21 lbs on the 18x9 rears.

Clubhead: are there serial numbers on the backs of yours? I'm wondering if yours are real, because they shouldn't weight 24lbs...

Perfectlap 05-02-2005 11:54 AM

Holy cow these wheels are NOICE.

I had them mounted on my new Toyo Proxes RA-1's,
First impresion:

First these tires are amazing. So much bite, and very decent in the rain.
Got stuck for about 15 miles in a downpour, and no hydroplanning or "numbness" for a dedicated DOT legal track tire. Sun came out and then the fun really started.
If I only had money for one mod this would be it.

THe only strange part was getting use to the higher stance vs. my 17"s
But like every other mod you get use to it fast.
The lightweight of these wheels means ZERO deteriotaion in ride quality even with rigild sidewalled tires.
And lastly, the looks. Pictures really don't do it justice on a Boxster.

Porschekid 05-02-2005 12:05 PM

If I didn't already have 18" turbo twists, these would definately be the wheels that I would get.

Your car would look even better with Speed Yellow side intake gills. Only about a $50 upgrade.

I had those on before I swapped them out for a pair of carbon ones I got off ebay. Figured they looked more unique and just a tad sportier.... hopefully :)

Yes, I checked the serial numbers once I got the wheels. It started with 996 xxx xxx xxx (strange that it doesn't start with 986 though). All the markings were also there. The wheels are made by Borbet as I could see the brand stamped on the inside as well. The Sports Classic 2 are made by BBS.

I'll be damned if there are actually imitation wheels made to that quality.

One other reason is I could've made a mistake subtracting while weighing myself and the wheels. That 1kg diff could have attributed to the 3lbs diff.... But then again, I would hate to think that I made such a dumb mistake :p
