vibrations in shifter
 

Hi,

I recently noticed the following problem:
The first 3 minutes (or so) after a cold start I feel strong vibrations in the shifter when I have my foot on the gas. after 3 minutes these vibrations are gone.

2002 Box S, Manual shift
74,000 miles
clutch is about 40k miles old
engine and motor mounts are approx 20k miles old

could this be a sign of the clutch giving up?

Does not sound like clutch to me if only symptom in the shifter. At steady speed of accelerating?

Any change in clutch pedal feel or when it engages/disengages the clutch? Spongy pedal? Gear grinding going into gear or shifting? Bled system it recently? Slipping in lower gears with medium to heavy gas pedal pressure?

If not, could be the flywheel. Maybe the transmission. Check oil level.

One suggestion, forget about mileage on the motor mount, how many years it's been baking in that heat and whether it's the outdated design are larger factors, nine years is certainly long enough for it to be shot. If you are more aware of a vibration going up or down grades it could be a sign. What stinks is no way to know whether it's bad for certain until you get to the buried treasure. Mine was cracked and non functioning at about 29K. It certainly won't hurt to bleed the clutch while you're down there either.
