Help! My 986forum Data is being used by a SPAMMER

Hey Folks,

I got an unsolicited offer from "Laura" at "Good Girls" to view a web cam recently. The offer referred to my passion for boxsters, which had me stumped.

I received another offer today today from "Suphan bury" on behalf of "Laura" for the web cam, and in the address line it said
:troll:
to: "sck_986forum.com@suenfamily.com"

I figured that the source of my email address was this forum, and wrote the administrator of the 986forum. My mail was rejected, so I am posting the message to the administrator, along with the offending junkmail below.

If you are suffering from the same junkmail, please chime in!

Thanks for your support,
Ike

Dear Administrator,

Please secure my private infomation better so that my 986forum data
is not used to send junkmail to me.

Thank you,

stephen wilson 01-13-2010 01:44 PM

I've gotten these also.

timothy 01-13-2010 01:50 PM

Ike, I suggest editing your post to exclude the email address before a web crawler scans this page and your email ends up in the mother of all spam databases.

cartagena 01-13-2010 02:54 PM

The fact that you just posted your email address in a public forum, while complaining about spam directed to it, suggests that, well, lets just say I would would not be pointing too many fingers at the forum operator.

I also would like to know if Laura was a good girl or not? Just in case I get spammed also.

Hey Cartagena & Timothy,

Thanks for your concern.

The "to:" address is not my personal email address, it is an email group title - referring to a group listing containing the data from individuals in this forum. That is what tipped me off to the source of the data leak. I am real careful about my personal data, that is why I am honked off that I am getting spammed as a result of data I have entrusted to the 986forum.

Put on your big boy pants and find out about Laura for yourselves.

Happy Trails,
Ike

I'll look into it. May take a few days though to get back.

Oh no! The 'to:' email is the email account I used for this forum. I create unique email addresses when I sign up at different forums.

I also received some spam emails sent to this account. At first I thought my personal email was leaked by the forum somehow but now I am shocked that my email is actually used in many other emails. What should I do? Please help!

Sputter 01-14-2010 04:31 AM

I just started to get the same emails. (mid last week?)

Samson 01-14-2010 04:56 AM

The easiest way to get rid of the emails would be to mark them as spam or junk in your email client. This way they'll just go to the spam folder and you'll never have to see them.

Either that or look for an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the email.

sd_boxster 01-14-2010 09:30 AM

Unsubscribing from unsolicited spam will (a) do nothing, or (b) confirm that your address is valid, guaranteeing you more spam. Opting out is great if you opted in, but I'm pretty sure nobody opted in in this case.

Since I never set the 986forum pref to share my email with anyone except admins, yet I too am receiving the same spam, my guess is that a VBulletin exploit has exposed our email addresses.

Samson 01-14-2010 09:46 AM

... or (c) work just fine. I suppose it all depends on the source and if they're at least considerate enough to give you the option, but I've had good luck.

I received the emails in question a month or so ago, and I reported them as spam (by clicking the "report as spam" button) in gmail. No issue since.

sd_boxster 01-14-2010 10:33 AM

Right on. I am much more cynical than you - or at least have less faith in the integrity of spammers.

schnellman 01-14-2010 10:47 AM

Even the Brits?

I just got an email from a member of the British Boxster forum, Boxanet offering me a deal on cuff links.

ekam 01-14-2010 11:52 AM

I got these emails as well.

I thought I'd get cheap rolex and viagara... but no...

Boxtaboy 01-14-2010 01:07 PM

Cheap girls should be more fun than a cheap rolex or viagra! :p

I think they don't consider that Spam because the owner of that board sent it, as he also owns that cufflinks site. All you have to do is go into your control panel on that site and uncheck the box that allows emails from admins, and you won't get those anymore. The issue in this site, I think is more of a breach of info.

For those who are receiving spam:

Go into quick links>edit options
Use the edit email/password option on the left

Change your password and delete your email address (or change it).

This is what we can suggest for now.

Wow what a great idea, give away one more of your own emails so the spammer can continue to do his job.

rkwei 01-14-2010 03:27 PM

Point taken.
