Opinions on spare tire
 

I am traveling from Pgh., Pa to Southern California throughout February for my first big road trip with a 99 986. Do I give up the space and take the spare tire or just carry some fix-a-flat. I just put on new Continental DWS Extreme Contact tires, and I am running the stock 16" wheels for my winter rubber. Any experiences or opinions. Bill

I've driven cross country a dozen times, including a few trips to Alaska and I've only experienced a flat tire once. But that one flat had a hole on the side wall so a can of fix-a-flat would have left me stranded if I didn't have a spare. I was also atleast 70 miles from the nearest town.

Definitely keep the spare tire. You never know if you're going to have a side wall puncture or a blow out.

For a really long drive like that, I'd consider putting the spare back in my frunk, as it would suck to have a blowout in the boonies.

I don't do a great deal of driving that would take me outside of civilization (i.e. more than a 30 mile tow to a tire shop), so a radial tire patch kit and a mini compressor have replaced my spare tire, jack, tools, etc.

The frunk is MASSIVE without the spare. By massive, I mean that I fit in it - 6'2, 215. I wouldn't want to travel that way, but I had to try...

+1 on keeping the spare in the car. Going through uncharted territory could really SUCK with a flat tire and no spare, 70 miles from noware. If you hear banjo's playing run like Hell or you could get "Ned beaty'd". There are a lot of deserted roads through places like deserts and mountains. Miles of no cell phone coverage I just wouldn't chance it. I went from San fran to Ohio without incident, but I still wouldn't chance it. I kept a survival kit of the following.

1.) 2 quarts of oil
2.) fix a flat
3.) 2 gallons of water and a bunch of trail mix in my family size cooler
4.) back pack with 2liter camel back dehydration
5.) My Glock 30 45 cal tucked under the passenger seat.
6.) Small tool kit a various sizes and Duct tape!!

Better safe than sorry!!

I wouldn't remove the spare for two reasons:
1 - If your sidewall gets damaged your screwed with Fix-A-Flat.
2 - The spare was designed to be kept in the car, removing it compromises the structural integrity of the Boxster, and your safety if you get into a front end collision.

So now we at least know why the frunk has that emergency release handle! :)

Murphy's law says if you keep the spare you won't need it. If you leave it behind you absolutely will need it. Giving up the small amount of space it takes up is well worth the peace of mind. Besides, if it won't fit in the trunk, the frunk, and the storage space behind the passenger compartment, you don't need it.

You can always call Tiger Woods for a ride. Maybe he'll send an "escort" to pick you up. :)
