shudder, smoke, codes...= AOS?

This is a neighbors car, 01, box S 76k miles, tiptronic - well maintained.

Last week she noticed a "ton" of smoke at start up. She said it went away. Yesterday, her check engine light popped on, and she noticed the car shuddering at idle, then spewing whitish plumes of smoke that went away, and then came back on hard accel. The codes were p1128 and p1130.

She just lost her job, and I think I can do this for her...before I have her spend the 150 or so for the part, and I waste my time, does this sound like an AOS?

Any tips or suggestions, or other things I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance!

Check and see if there is a vacuum holding the oil filler cap on while the engine is idling. If so, the AOS failed.

+1 on AOS and pulling the oil cap off while idling.
Mine failed couple month ago with same exact symptoms and same codes.
90 bucks from Sunset

Definetely the AOS Fred! Same codes I had and same symptoms... Not to bad a fix make sure you buy the hose clamp pliers to make it easier on yourself and to add to your tool collection...

great advice from all

thanks guys - the oil cap was very hard to remove with the car at idle, and when it did come off, it came off with a "ssssssssshhhhhhhuuuuupppp" sucking sound. I removed the aos, few hard to reach bolts, and some almost impossible clips, but it's out.

I'll check out "sunset" today and see how quickly we can get her back on the road.

Thanks again!

Got the part today from jim ellis porsche in atlanta - $115. got it in, everything back together and....IT'S FIXED! The owner was thrilled, and asked me to pass a very grateful "thanks" onto this board. You've all earned some good karma for the holiday season!
