The New Boxster Spyder

I had to touch myself when I saw it.

How many will now be adding the Porsche side stripes to their cars?
176 pounds isn't that great of weight reduction, though I like the concept (always thought the radio wasn't necessary in my car). I think it'd fun to make one lose 400-500 lbs...and stick a Raby 3.6 in it; that would be a screamer! Wonder if they'll jack the price sky high like they did with the 997 Carrera Classic. |
Wow! Nice little package.
Rear LSD, 20mm lower, 320hp 3.4L engine, etc... All this for the same price as a Boxster S! I never use AC in my Boxster, but I surely hope they retained the heat (up here in Ottawa, Canada driving in Nov/Dec can get really cold!) I wonder how much these will be used in 5-6 years? |

Here is another link

$58 for a S with no option vs $61.2 MSRP fully loaded... BUT no roof & no A/C ... chick in the passenger seat may not like that. ;) |
My question is whether my local PCA chapter will allow this car on the track. They don't allow cabs to be on the track with the top down. Will this one pass with the "inclement weather" cover on the car?
Is the direct injection motor still a M96? I'm gonna salivate over whatever they bring out that is mid engine and doesn't have the M96 variant motor in it. (Well, that's not totally true. I won't be panting for a turbocharged four cylinder VW engine that is rumored to be added to the boxster lineup next year) |

are you guys serious?
OK, I like 320 bhp - no problem But otherwise this car looks like a "ricer's dream" to me  And pay $6,000 extra for NO radio NO A/C and no electric top mechanism? I can do that MYSELF MUCH cheaper  |

Waste of time. My .02

As someone in the market for his first Box--and considering a newer 987--I too am a bit disappointed in this offering. When I saw the spy videos several months ago I was getting excited. Now that it's out--yes, it looks nice. But as jmatta said, 178lbs isn't really that huge. if you think about it, it's essentially the difference between having a passenger or not. For someone like me--looking for a daily driver---the lack of a true top makes this a deal breaker. I would have actually preferred just a manual top even if that added say 80lbs back---and keep all the other changes they made (e.g. suspension, more hp, speedster humps)...
the search continues.... |
Not a Fan. Looks too 'Busy' for my taste
|
Flat 8?
IMO, if the back had a single smaller hump like the 911, I'd like it a lot! Right now it's ok... Why can't they remove the rear trunk and cram in a flat 8? Now that would be cool!

LOL at the photo series showing the car driven into a rainstorm, then getting stuck under an overpass while it pours:

I'm sure it drives like a dream but I'm not a fan of the design.
The word Platypus comes to mind -- a bunch of aftermarket ideas cobbled together to make something that technically works but isn't what anyone would term elegant. |
As I said earlier, if I were in the market, I'd be inclined to purchase a roller earlier S, remove as much weight as possible (see spec racer Boxster site) and stuff a Raby 3.6 in it. You'd have a GT3 killer for a whole lot less than Porsche's marketing gimmick.
I've never been a fan of the humps...it makes the car appear weighty in the wrong spot; and that "rain bonnet" is simply of no use for anything other than garage queens. |
Hey man, my modded 2000 base has an electric top and AC and it weighs at least 100 lbs less than the new Spyder, so what's the big deal. Oh, ya, I forgot, I dont have 320 hp.... :D
Ed  |
