We are not husband material (according to Oprah)
|
Tell that to my wife of 21 years!
|
I bought my mid-life crisis mobile instead of getting a mistress. Far cheaper in the long run. ;)
|
Funny, you think Oprah, Inc. would be aversed to pre-judging people or profiling them based on what they drive.
|
What a load of crap!
A friend of mine (a bit older than me) saw me getting into my Firehawk and said, "I should get a mid-life crisis car." I said, "I'm not having a mid-life crisis. I just never grew up." |
lets see my wife and I got married... then we got a porsche. are we not nurturing? to me a boxster is more "coccooning" than a minivan.
|
Anyone weak-minded enough to want Oprah to explain to them anything and then tell them how they should feel about it has no business driving. And yes, there are plenty of them out there.
|
Who is Oprah and I why would I care?
:barf: |
so what exactly is husband material? the guy in the minivan?
and what's wrong with "quick hookups"? my wife and I have those all the time! :D |
That quack apparently hasn't ever owned or let alone driven a fine German example of perfection (except the ims part ;) )
He sounds about as competent as that "MANTRAitor" Dr. Phil. :D |
If you are a single guy and you buy a high mileage 97 boxster that needs a lot of work like my car did five years ago, it might take away so much time and money from the dating ritual that a woman would be turned off by it.
But to throw all single guys driving boxsters under the bus like that is a gross generalization and overstatement. But the statement did the trick, didn't it? Without it in the article, none of us would have read it or wasted five minutes of our lives reading and writing these comments. |

How about the guy who's stuck with the wife who wanted the Boxster so we could race it in autocross events?
|
Oprah? Dr. Phil? Garbage in-garbage out.
Minivans? Doesn't Dexter (showtime serial killer) drive a minivan? I drive a boring vehicle every day. ('08 F150) I don't think (or I hope it doesn't) have any effect on the perceptions of me from the opposite sex. Ummm... maybe it does. Oh well. Most people in the area I live in don't even know about the Boxster in the garage. I didn't buy it for image issues. Why are we talking about this??? sean |
when Oprah demonstrates a capacity to keep a relationship alive herself, then I'll consider her opinion.
|
Well,
I have both. A Boxster S, 944 turbo S and a minivan but my daily driver is a Lexus or a CRX Si. Minivan is driven only for long trips which I do often. My P-cars are driven mainly on weekends. I bought the P-cars cause I wanted them not because of image. Around here a Boxster seems to be a dime a dozen. I get more attention in the CRX than in any of my of my other cars. Mainly to see if I want to sell it. |
here's an article that somewhat balances this stuff out:
http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/10/14/study-testosterone-cars.html Basic premise: Porsches keep you more like a man than boring sedans. |
Yes I was going to post that too. It's too funny that my last car was a 96 Camry.
|
I like the anger behind the wheel part. I live in an area infested with giant SUV's commandeered by phone yaking, coffee drinking women that don't know how to operate turn signals and find it perfectly fine to ignore traffic signals while multi-tasking on who-knows-what behind the wheel...oh, did I stereotype?
My kids knew the term "dumb-ass" before it was popularized by Beavis and Butthead. Yeah, I drive my P-cars looking for a quickie...little do the "experts" know the drive is usually more enjoyable (at least the aftermath part). I know some female Boxster owners that enjoy driving their cars as much as I do...maybe they're looking for a little action on the side? |
Last I check, receiving an honorary Doctorate Degree from Duke University doesnt make you a real Doctor that can diagnose and practice Psychology.
|
to follow oprah's logic, a guy that picks up a girl for a date in a full-size cargo van is ready for marriage??? gimme a break!
a car is a car, don't judge a book by its cover. BTW i have a boxster and a bmw wagon, according to oprah i'm conflicted. |
World's Shortest Fairytale:
Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl, 'Will you marry me?' The girl said, 'NO!' And the guy lived happily ever after and drove a Porsche and went fishing and hunting and played golf a lot and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted. The End |
So what about us girls with Porsches!?

I'm sure Geoffrey Miller, rolls around in his Prius slowing down the fast lane. I hate the stigma surrounding certain cars. No where in that incessant rambling did it say anything about buying a car because you like it or are enthusiasts like so many here. It's always an ulterior motive.

I did not buy my car due to a mid-life crisis.... I bought it to compensate for a small "ego". |

Of course, these TV show therapists can't decide which it is. One day, they are on talking about how women love bad boys. Good boys don't have a chance, until the women decides to settle down!
Translated, until she wants a lifetime meal ticket, she will play with fire. Then she wants warm and cuddily. Candidly, I never much thought about what women want. It seems whatever it is, I don't have it. Still, I am pretty happy and my wife seems happy too! Oh yeah, I drive what I want, because I want to. |
I've always noted to my wife of 17 years, and she'll generally(??) agree, that there are a hell of a lot worse things a married guy could do then enjoy a nice car. She does hate when I do track days, but it goes with the territory.

I'm really surprised that Oprah, who crusades against issues like racism, would allow someone to publish such a prejudiced, bigoted opinion of a minority group ( are 986 owners not a minority in this world? We certainly are not a a majority ) in her magazine. What minority group is this author going to attack next?

I would say "Eat me Oprah" but I'm afraid she would take it literally!
