Power Top Problem

Not much luck with the search function.
I put the top down today and right when it hit the limit I heard a loud snap. Now the best way to describe it is the top is out of synch. When trying to put the top back up, the cover will open and then begin to close with no movement from the top. Right about the time the cover is about to close completely, the top starts to come up. I was able to open up the cover, stop it, close the top manually, then motor the cover down. It was very easy to move the top (?!). Any DIY tips? I'm dreading the drive up to Atlanta now. All I was really needing was a brake system flush, now I'm hearing "cha-ching, cha-ching"!
Oh yea, 2005 Boxster S, Premium package.
Thanks.

Factory cable ends are plastic and can snap off, the way you describe the top as "out of synch" or "racked" combined with the described noise sounds like that's what happened. They have modified units available aftermarket that have metal instead of plastic ends, don't know if they are any better. The Bentley manual has a section showing assembly, disassembly and timing, of the three I would think getting the timing right would be the biggest PIA, good luck.
