Least offensive way to mount a front plate. (an example)
In 23 years of driving, I've never had a front plate on my car. It seems that the San Francisco police department, though they don't enforce non-injury hit and run (not joking about this), they will pull you over for no front plate.
I stuck mine on the dash for about 6 months, but am tired of looking at it..... so I bought some industrial strength Velcro and stuck it to the front of the car. I put down a couple strips of clear-bra material first, since the adhesive on the velcro is possibly strong enough to rip off paint. viola! |
i just pay the ticket and move on. no front plates on any of my cars...

My car is registered in Florida so it’s a non issue but I was recently in Texas and a 911 owner had a novel approach to mounting his front plate using the tow eye. (See Photo)

tow hook plate kit
I use a kit that connects to the front tow hook location, for times when I need a front plate, inspection, etc.. *edit - just like the one below.
They are required here in Mass as well. No need to add more holes in the bumper. I found this was a quick solution that I could take on / off easily and also store it securely in the front trunk. If you get pulled over you can always ask if you can put it back on, maybe you'll get lucky... http://www.moweraxle.com/licenseplatebrackets/porschetowhookkits.html There are a few other types of tow hook plate kits, if you are good with metal work you could prob. even make something to fit your needs. |
Temp change?
Roadracer, have you seen any change in your running temp since the placement of the plate seems to block off some air flow to both your right and center radiator inlets?

Hi Allen,
I haven't driven it much since I put the plate on. I don't expect to see any change in operating temp. I'd say it's less than a 10% reduction in air flow when the fans are off and probably less than a couple percent reduction when the fans are on. If I ever take it to the track, I'll un-velcro it for the last couple percent. |
Done! I am a sucker for this stuff.

QUOTE] In Nebraska you're required to display a front plate. The Omaha PD are too lazy to pull you over if that's the only violation. However, the NE State Patrol love to stop you for no front plate (got me on both Boxs). It would be great fun to have them pull you over and then whip up the plate while they're chatting with you. :D |
I thought hat would be funny too. Get pulled over and say "what are you talking about officer? "
|
That would be humorous. I've seen others mount a magnet behind the bumper, then attach the plate to a rubber backed metal mount, so that the plate can be put on/ taken off at will, extremely easily, with no damage to paint.
|
It would be cool if you could just take a high resolution pic of you plate, have it transfered to a sticker and just put that on. I doubt its legal but it might not get noticed if you could use reflective paint. I know "what have I been smoking", but hey, I hated getting tickets when i owned my corvette and told the cops I will not drill a hole in my bumper. Fortunately (I think) my porsche came with it so I didn't have to cry as I desicrated my bumber with a drill. :barf:

I'm in SF too, and they do enforce a couple of things. I've actually gotten pulled over. And for the following offenses:
Left turn on Mission during rush hour. Rolling stop in the Sunset. But never for my lack of front plate. I'd do a temp fix - it solve so you didn't have to pay the ticket, then remove it. You'll never get pulled over again... ..until they start actually prosecuting MUNI drivers for killing pedestrians. |
i recently got pulled over on 92 between 280 and 101
The CHP officer saw that I didn't have a front license plate and gave me the choice between "moving violation" (a.k.a. "speeding ticket") and "fix it" ticket Guess which one I chose :D |

If I ever get forced to display mine (CT does require a front plate!) I was thinking of fabricating special brackets of wood or plastic that would mount it lower on the inward curve of my '01 non-S. Would not look as goofy as propped up on the front most section of the bumper like Porsche does it. If I had an S, that would be another story. But I'd guess that covering half of the middle radiator would not make a difference in non-race situations.
