buzz sound

I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I have an '01 S manual trans, On cold start up only I have a high pitch electric motor like sound. I did not see the fan in the pass air duct moving during this, and the fuel pump is in front with the tank I'm assuming. It does it with the clutch in or out. She has 98 k on her so I know it can be anything at this point, any help would be appreciated

What you probably hear is the air pump for the emissions... sounds like a high weeze for about 5 minutes or less. Once the car gets going the pump shuts down. It's what Porsche (and other car companies) use to pass emmissions tests in cold start up.... they pump fresh air into the exhaust to fool the emmission test.

It's called a "secondary air injection pump" and it's purpose is to help warm up the catalytic converter faster by providing extra oxygen.

Thanks guys, I would hate it that I spent money on the 997 shifter upgrade when I had something wrong with the car.
