Headlights - Anyone know what this guy did?
I took this shot at Porsches to Oxford this weekend. Anyone know what this guy did to his headlights? The look significantly brighter inside than almost any I've seen. It's looks like its a bit more than de-ambering.
I'm not really interested in hearing about the body add-on's and overall opinions about the asthetics of this guys car........just curious about the headlights. :) |
He converted his front end to a 2002-2003 996 front end.
It definitely requires changing the headlights , fenders, and bumper cover...not sure what else. There are a few guys on the board who have had it done so hopefully they will chime in. I believe you can get the parts from LA Dismantlers for around 5k (or it used be around that price) |
What he did? Turned his boxter into a 911 wanna be, pimpwagon...
|
I can't tell from the photos, but if you say that the inner housings look brighter he may have taken the lenses off and repainted the silver gray housings with a chrome finish. This is just a guess of course. Or are the +02 996 housings always finished in bright silver compared to the Boxster and early 996 headlights?
I have seen others do the opposite and spray the inside black. |
Other than converting the front end to a 996 '02+ and changing out the amber bulbs, it doesn't look like he did anything special to the light housings.
Jeph on the board here also converted his front end, which looked great IMHO, and the lights look just as bright: http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-good-005.jpg http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-good-002.jpg Jeph's Front End Conversion Thread |
I did the conversion also. It's extremely pricey and dollar for dollar can't really be justified. Although I have a one of a kind Boxster....that no one ever notices except for me. :p

I'll add that it's worth it when you get your insurance company to chip in for most of it. My out of pocket expense was $2000. And back me up on this Yellow, those lights are brighter than Boxster Litronics (when properly aligned) -especially the brights! (Dang I miss my Boxster.) |
... and back to the original question:
I had the chance to look at MANY 2002+ 996 headlights while being at Thunderhill with PCA this weekend. The 2002+ 996 headlights have chrome where the 986 lights have either painted plastic or mildly reflecting material. So he just used the standard 996 headlights for his conversion |
Ok, aside from the '02+ 996 conversion, there could be a couple of other factors.
The quality of that picture is hard to deduct from, but it doesn't look like the turn signal is amber -possibly a clear bulb is being used. ALSO... Even in that style of light (that we are generically calling '02+ 996) there are 2 versions available:
The Turbo lights are smooth inside and surrounding areas of the lights. The Carrera lights have these ridges -quite like Ruffles Potato Chips that run vertically through them. Turbo (Clean and smooth) http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-turbolight.jpg Carrera (Notice the ridges) http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-04-996-light.jpg Furthermore, halogen versions do not have the oval chrome washer/sprayer cap while the Litronics (xenons) do. |
