Felipe Massa severe crash in Hungarian GP Quals

Felipe Massa was struck in the head by a spring that fell off the car of Reubens Barrichello during qualifying at the Hungarian GP. He lost control and crashed head-on into the tire barrier.

He suffered numerous skull fractures and was flown to hospital where he underwent brain surgery to remove the skull fragments and repair the injuries. He remains in critical condition.

Felips Massa qualifying crash

What a freak accident! I was shocked that he suffered such serious injuries since he was wearing a helmet. That's a lot of concentrated force though.

Last week Henry Surtees was killed when he was struck in the head by the wheel off of another car. Makes me wonder if they're gonna start requiring some kind of windshield to protect the driver's head.

I hope he recovers fully. He's a damn good driver.
