Just built a $121k Boxster S. WOW!
Just for s__s and giggles I built a new S on Porsche's website trying to see how high it could go.
Yes, you CAN have an options list that costs more than the car itself! :barf: I know this is rediculous, nobody would really do this (for one, it would probably look tacky with some of the interior ones). Point is--Porsche needs a reality check! A $57k base MSRP for an S that does NOT include Xenon headlights or auto climate control or heated seats as standard? It's no wonder they are the most profitable car company in the world. I guess as long as folks are still willing to pay for it, they will keep building it and pricing it as such. CRCGuy |

I can understand some options not being standards. ie traction control, heated seats, stereos, depending on where you live. But I do agree that they are frickin rediculous on options. its like everything is ala carte. I guess I will just keep hoping some rich/foolish person is willing to take the hit on depreciation for the first 2 or 3 years so I can come in and buy it on the cheap. :D |
These days, being the most profitable car company isn't saying much!

Good point!! |
For a lot less than 121k, a guy could buy a totally loaded Boxster S, maybe a 2008 model, and shoehorn a GT2 motor in it and gut the suspension.
A while back someone asked me if I came into a pile of cash if I'd buy a TT or not... and I said I'd ship my car off to Jake and tell him to find a GT2 motor, make it bullet proof, and turn my 1997 into the fastest mid-engine Porsche on the planet. Then it would go to a paint shop the interior would be ripped out and redone while it was having a proper paint job. That's my dream car. The one I have now, only totally different :) |

Blue, I never really researched the GT1/2/3 motors to know if they too have the IMS issue or the D chunk cylinder failure problems the M96 motors have.
But since I have 121k to play with, Jake will get to do whatever he likes to a GT2 motor to make it more better and bragworthy. Shoot, Jake might just bore it out and make it a 700 HP monster motor. |
Im sorry Randall ... Id rather have this engine in my boxster from TPC Racing 3.7 Turbo
Now that is a proper way to spend 121k :) |
Players, I'd go for that TPC 3.8 ST motor...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZSGkyBqfqg&feature=player_embedded I didn't know it existed. |
Your are right!! The cost of new is outrageous!
That and the fact that Porsche over reached the past couple of years and now may have to accept more VW ownership...or ownership from the middle east. Maybe time to get back to building cars instead of trying to take over the automotive world. But than again, that is why I tend to buy used.
|
Haha, Randall I figured you'd like that. I heard the sound clip from the teaser video before and on the first rev I thought I died and went to heaven.
Imagine the sound of that engine in a boxster... forget the cayman. Top down and hearing the 6 purrr with the intake. What really gets me is with that directly behind me I could leave a Vett standing still.. what a dream..... Honestly for 121k I would buy a 2000S for 15k or so... drop that engine into it (60k?) and that leaves 46k for interior, suspension, exterior body kit and carbon fiber, new paint job.. and there would still be money left over to take my significant other out shopping downtown in the new car. Thats just me... I wouldnt buy new. |
Or just go electric:

Im not a fan of OBAMA.. or the "Green" scam. Go research it yourself. It is a natural cycle of the world that we are in and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it... think of ourselves as a flea on the back of a dog, the flea has no say in what the dog does.

Uh......right. We can save this for another thread. But it's true--we WILL pay a price for converting 2billion year organic life into CO2 (and other compounds). Nothing is free. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. GIVE ME A SMALLER ENGINE P.S. I have a Ph.D in Chemistry. I don't need to research it... |

I believe a gt motor has little to do with the IMS d-chiping line. Its actually a derivative of (o god what's it called)that thing that Bob Gates bought which, in some ways, was a derivative of an air cooled 911.
Nothing to bullet proof there. Regards, PK |
