Independent mechanic oil change cost
 

How much does your independent mechanic charge you for an oil change?

$125 or $150 iirc

I pay about $95 for Mobil 1 and a filter.

I'm weighing the cost between having my mechanic do it or just doing it myself. I get a discount although I'm not sure how much. When I get my car back tomorrow, I'll know what he charged me.

I needed it done asap to go out of town and didn't have time to do it this time.

If you trust him, let him do it but he MUST let the car fully drain (20 minutes). The local bozo's that drained my car thought it was done dripping when the stream was thin and there was enough oil left that they overfilled it!

I got a quote the other day from an indy shop (Fischer) in Lake Barrington for about $137. They said it would be about $25 less if the used a different synthetic than Mobil 1 that was still Porsche approved. A Penzoil I.I.R.C. Don't know actually if that is on the list or not.

Yellow, don't get into the habit of having people work on your car without a written estimate or quote. This helps to reduce missed expectations plus others etc.

$150 with Agip.

It is certainly not a $30 oil change that I used to do at the local garage I worked at through high school ... though I wish it was ...

ekam is that including filter??? thats totally worth it. where is this shop?

It's in Markham. They deal with lots of Ferraris and Porsches.

You guys in Canada are lucky too, because you can buy Mobil 1's 5W50 at Wal-Mart. The only Porsche approved 5W50 oil.

This is not too easy to find in the USA.

I understand where your concern lies but, I'm confident he wouldn't rip me off or change something without my consent. I come from a Porsche family and we've been going to this mechanic for over 15 years now. I trust them and that says a lot because I normally don't trust any mechanic. ;)

Q (Quaker State) Horsepower 5w40 full synthetic says that it meets ACEA A3/B3/B4, is approved for use in Ferrari & Maserati and is suitable for use in: VW 502.00, VW 505.00, 503.01, MB 229.5, BMW Long-life-01 and Porsche except Cayenne. It is supposedly the same as one of the Euro Shell Helix oils. Supposedly...

It's pretty hard to find, though.

My independent mechanic (me) charged about 3 beers.

Got the Mobil 1 from Meijers on sale, $20 a gallon and the filter from the Zone ($14).
Drained the oil and filter using two oil pans, took the old oil to the Zone, they found the filter while I dumped the old oil.

Total time was about 1 hour. Total cost was about $60, less tax.... and beer.

I'm not a fanatic, the car has 9 quarts of oil, drain it until it drips, then put the plug back in. Watch the oil level as you refill... I used both the dip stick and the dash gage. I put in the two gallons, then started to watch the level.
