New Member!!! Oil Wrench???
 

Hello!
My wife and i love our 98 boxster. I have all the tools/ supplies I need to do my first DIY oil change, except for an oil filter wrench. I searched the archives and I've seen that the Autozone "B" has worked well for some members. Does the "B" cap wrench work well with a torque wrench??? Any other tips for my first oil change??

Yes, ditch the factory paper filter and purchase the LN Engineering adapter and use a real filter.

Also, use something other than 0W40 Mobil1, like a good quality 5W40 or 10W40 synthetic...

The engine you save, may be your own.

I changed the oil on my Boxster this past weekend. This was the easiest one I've done so far and what made it easy was that I bought some Rino Ramps from Walmart.

As for tightening the oil filter back on, I do by hand. The torque specs are very low, hand is easier and safer.

Don't know the answer to your wrench question. I use a regular strap wrench but gently use it at the bottom of the filter cover where it won't distort the plastic. (Others may shout loudly against this. :eek: )

Tips-
Observe that the o-ring is on the bottom ring of the filter cap.
Oil the new ring so it's not dry when you put it back on.

Be sure you have a BIG drain pan. There will be LOTS of oil coming out.

I did this and it is a really nice mod with the Napa Gold 1042 spin on high flow filter. Mobil 1 and K&N make good filters for the adaptor also, but Napa Gold flows best according to Charles Navarro at LN Engineering.

By the way, I bought the Porsche wrench about 4 years ago. Last month found cheap workable version had been in my toolbox for years!

Also considering Motul 300V in 5W-40 from LNE while you are ordering.

To answer the first part of your question, I use the standard "B" oil cap wrench and it works okay. Give it a few smacks while seating the wrench so it does not fly off. While torquing it down I find the wrench twists around the oil cap ever so slightly but enough to make it a little bit of a pain to get off at the very end. Give it a little bang the other direction and off it comes.

The picture seems to indicate the rear-end only being raised. Don't forget, you won't get all of the old oil out unless the car is level.

I lower mine once the drain is open...problem is the car is so low, I squash the plastic drain tub. Started parking the car on two by fours to raise it enough all the way around to get the job done.

I just picked up a set last week - very handy. I use them for my riding mower as well. And "B" wrench at autozone works very well just don't expect them to know what you are looking for. I just got blank stares and had to find them myself.

Why is the Porsche filter so retro?
 

The last time I had a filter like the one on the boxster was when I had a Morris Minor station wagon in the 60's. Why does Porsche still use this method? Spin on filters have been with us in this country (USA) for 40 years or more is this true of Europe?

Thank you all for the tips. After searching the archives, I am going to buy the Rite Fit A251 at Pep Boys. It seems other forum members have had good luck with that oil filter wrench.

This is the proper size filter wrench 76mm by 14 flutes. Should be able to fine this at any parts store. Under $10.00.
