Dumping coolant follow up

Had my local P-car mechanic mail me a new filler cap #.03. I installed this cap and added distilled water to the reservoir. Drove around locally to bring up to temp., 1/8" over the 180 mark which has been my running temp for the last three years, and experienced no overheating or coolant dump. Cap also make a sigh when you unscrew it not unlike opening a new jar that has vacuum seal. Drove down to our regional spring event yesterday where I had inspection (passed with Stebro 2nd cat delete pipes), oil change and a compression test done on the cooling system. Test showed no loss of pressure or leakage. I am hoping that the cap alone does the trick. We are planning a trip down to Parsippany NJ next Sun. for the Zone 1 concours. That trip should tell the tale but I have more confidence in driving the car with the new cap in place. I will keep you all posted.

I know this has been discussed, but I'm still running with the #.01 cap. Does anyone feel I should update to the newest #.03 just for the sake of it?; I haven't experienced any problems after 7 years and 15k miles.

I have a #.02 but intill I see the failing signs I won't change it.

If it's working for you, no need to replace it. But, it is 7 yrs. old and if nothing else has been in service long enough to possibly fail. It's plastic, which can warp from heat cycling and does have an 'o' ring which will wear out sooner or later, both of which can cause it to leak under pressure. If you have a system pressure checker such as the stant or KD you can pressure test the cap and seal.

I wouldn't run right out and get one as long as yours is working because they're prone to progressive, not sudden failure - keep an eye on the trunk lid for signs of condensation. But, they are cheap and if ordering parts, say from sunset or such, I'd probably throw one in. Possibly save a little on S/H.

If you look at the inside of your trunk lid right above the cap you might find some white residue or some condensation. If thats the case you need a new cap. If not then you probably can live what you have until it fails.

Did you notice any water pooling up under the reservoir? Or was the leak so small that the amount of coolant leaked immediately evaporate? I had no water under my tank so I think the cap will be the answer. Thanks for you contribution.
