Durametric question
 

A friend of a friend sold his Boxster and is asking $200 for his Durametric cable. The "enthusiast package" sells new for $287+shipping and includes a plastic storage case, software CD, and presumable some type of instruction manual, none of which he has. He says the software is downloadable free from Durametric's site, which seems to be the case. The hard plastic case would be nice, but it's not a necessity.

If I went for this deal (I'd pay ~$150), does anyone know if there would be any downside? Would there be any limitations on my access to future upgrades or technical assistance, or potential warranty issues?

the "enthusiast" package can link up with 3 different cars (after that it's game over)
So it would be good to make sure that there are still "two shots left in the gun"
Otherwise the only think you REALLY need is the cable, $150 sounds fair to me

Thanks for the info on the 3 car limit. That's critical, as I'd like to be able to continue to use the cable if I change to a newer Box in the future.

Gary, I called Durametrics a while back and asked about the three car limit and he said that he'd reset the software for me if I bought it and needed it for a fourth car.

You should give them a call and ask. I bet if you install a fresh copy of the software on your laptop and plug it in, you will have three full cars and not two.

Generally with the 3 car limit - it sells for close to $300 new. Worth about $200 if it has 2 cars remaining. Worth about $100 if there is one car remaining.

So if the unit you are considering has 2 cars left, and you can get it for $150, that's a good deal. Mine didn't come with a plastic case. The software is downloadable. So the only real important part of the whole thing is the cable.

So if I get this right... he's trying to sell you a $150 cable? No book, no software, no fancy plastic box..... no guarantee...... no deal!

Can he show you that is works on his old car?

Spoke with the seller today. Seems to be a very nice guy, totally straight up, no BS. He said it was used on his car only, so I made the deal.

The lack of a plastic box doesn't really matter to me. I was able to download the software from Durametric. Don't think a user manual, if there was one available, would be of much use. Everything I need to know is on Durametric's site or built into the software - and then I have you guys to ask. Don't think the remaining two car limit's going to be an issue for me, as I don't trade cars often.

All in all, I think I got a pretty fair deal.

In reality you got a new cable. You are using it on the first car now and you have two left--total of 3 usable cars. The software goes by vehicle and not owner. Ed

The limit is imposed by code in the cable not the software on the PC.
