Tree sap on the seats

I was working in the yard under my pine tree and got a nice glob of tree sap on my back. After completing the yard projects, I hop into the Boxster (of course wearing the same shirt... and the nice glob of tree sap is now on the leather seat.

I started cleaning with dish soap... no result. Did a web search and then I used vegetable oil. The vegetable oil cleaned the sap right off. I wipe the oil off with some dish soap and the spot is all clean.

Thought I would share this little housekeeping with everyone.

Sounds like your car will smell like a salad garnished with pine nuts...

Just kidding, good work.

That's a great tip! I've encountered tree sap a few times and always wondered if anything could defeat it's awesome stickyness. Now I won't fear pine trees quite as much.

Olive, corn or soy? :)

Goop hand cleaner takes tree sap right off of everything I've ever gotten it on, including clothing. I haven't tried it on leather, so I can't say for sure it wouldn't discolor, but it works great at dissolving that sticky tree sap. It didn't take any color out of my blue jeans.

I believe Canola oil. Didn't want to use olive oil on the German car... I'll save that for an Italian car.

The Goop that I am familiar with is a petroleum based product, which I think would be too harsh / drying on leather. This may no longer be true, but just in case... I would watch out for that. Oil based products [like Vath2001's simple solution] make for a nice solvent that is leather friendly.

I use Wurth Citrus Degreaser for any stcky or adhesive removal. The citrus oil will not harm leather, vinyl or paint.
