Track day numbers
 

What kind of numbers do you guys use when you take your car to the track? I've heard that magnetics tend to peel in the wind, so you have to tape the leading edge. Self-adhesive vinyl have come pretty highly recommended. I was going to buy the from clubregistration.net until I saw that they want $30 for them. :eek:

Well on a race car, permanent vinyl is the way to go. I would print on some removable vinyl and keep it on for the summer then take it off before heading back to school.

Most magnet material will peel at high speeds. There are a few that will stand up to the speed. Magnum Magnetics makes a 12x18 magnetic vinyl that is incredibly strong and has a white face. You can then put black sticky vinyl letters on them. They look great and hold well. The good magnets are not cheap though.

I made reusable numbers (both sides and hood) for about $12. Buy magnetic HVAC vent covers from Home Depot or Lowes, use http://www.thscc.com/autocross/forms/nums.pdf as a stencil, and tape the leading edges with painters tape. I scaled the numbers 10" high and they have worked great through several DEs.

I just went to a local sign shop and had a pair of magnetic signs made, for $35 or so? I also put a piece of tape on the front and rear edges. Top speed at our local course was around 100 mph on the back straight, never had any problems at all.

I found some tape that was guaranteed not to damage car paint, and came in a bunch of colors to match. Can't remember where it came from, but it was one of the normal auto/detailing/race stuff web-sights. Looked very closely, but never saw any damage to the paint. It looks and feels like duct tape, but was from another manufacturer.

Lots of people just made numbers from the tape itself, and that worked fine too.

Note: gently wipe away all grit & dust with a clean cloth before applying the tape.

Vinyl "Contact Paper" works extremely well for temporary track numbers. You can cut them out using a stencil, peel and stick to your car and throw them away at the end of the day.

Very inexspensive and leaves little or no adhesive (easily removed with wax).
