Looking for the oil filter removal wrench

Any one have a good source / good price for the oil filter removal wrench?

I just use a regular strap style oil filter wrench, it works fine. Be sure and get the closest size you can though.

I own and particularly like this one: Oil Filter Wrench

While technically a Mercedes wrench, it has the requisite 74mm/14 flutes... but in addition, it's cheap, and it has 2 locking bolts which keep the cannister in place, not always possible with the 'porsche' wrench, especially if the plastic canister is slick with oil... it's easy to 'round off' the flutes on the canister. Has both a 3/8" female and a 22mm(?) Hex drive so it's easy to get a torque wrench on it.

autozone cap filter wrench "B" model. worked very well for me. had plenty of grip. $3.99

+1 on the Autozone wrench. That's what I Have. I have used it twice without a problem.

I think I ordered mine from Pelican...twenty some dollars if IIRC. I'm converting to the LN billet adapter...won't even be using it in the future.

AutoZone and others have comparable wrenches, as previously mentioned.

call ahead if you go with autozone. They don't know what the heck I was talking about a few of the shops I visited.

Napa

Went to Napa - they had one for $3.99 - but is a 76/74mm tapers down I guess.
For four bucks I will give it a try.

I've been changing my own oil for years, and until I bought my Boxster I trusted my judgment as to whether I tightened the oil filter properly. For the Boxster, I use a torque wrench and set it exactly at 18ft/lbs. Maybe I'm paranoid.

Or maybe you're just smart !

18 ft./lbs. is not a lot. It's very easy to overtighten it, even by hand.

Best part?... You don't find out until it's been on there for how many miles and heat cycles?

Then it's even tougher to remove the next time.

Use the right tool - save some headaches!

LB - right again!

74/76mm wrench will not work - oil filter is in way too TIGHT to get it loose.
Do I need to order the Mercedes wrench or can I get it local...autpo parts or Mercedes Dealership?

Sorry it didn't work for you.

I dunno if MB dealers sell them or not. You can try a local German/Foreign auto parts store, they may have it/one.

Thumbs up Saved by the forum...

Had the car up and the oil drained so didn't want to wait for the internet order and shipping. Went to Autozone - and yes sir no freaking clue. Tried to get me to try a multi-sized spring loaded device that tightens as you turn - I guess it either would work or crush the filter housing.

Anyway wandered to the back and found the mysterious oil filter wrench "B" - no size marked, so specs, no description, nothing. To most everyone (includIng the clerks) it was a just black cap thingy in a bin.

But it worked perfect on a filter housing that was tighter than s&*! and hadn't been off in probably a couple of years or more.

How long have you had the car? You didn't change the oil of unknown duration when you first bought it?

That's the very 1st thing I do whenever I buy a used car.

Long story er legend...

Won't go into it here. But I have driven the car less than 20 miles. Last mainentance records I can find are about 2 years old or so. So I am assuming not much has been done over the last 24-30 months and 20k miles. So I am starting with a 90k maintenance - and will go from there.

Good idea, that's the way to do it. Keep notes and receipts and start a book on the car. Will help you later and help when you sell it.
