WTF is happening with my windows

Driving my 986 home tonight the windows suddenly each rolled down about 5 inches. I couldn't roll them back up and still can't, while the car is turned on. the only way to close them is to turn the key into the lock position on the door lock and hold it for several seconds. as soon as i put the key back into the ignition and turn, the windows go down again. the cab-top latch is locked in place, so i don't think it is related to this.

I believe i got a CEL light right about the time this occurred. (related?)

ideas, anyone?

sg

Probably just the ignition switch and nothing to worry about.

the switch was just switched out a few weeks ago. I'm also not sure how that would affect the windows (?)

I've had similar problems (odd power window operation and a CEL) when I've had a low battery (i.e. car was in for convertible top replacement, operated it all day).

I found that charging the battery overnight had the windows operating normally. I cleared the CEL code (a MAF code if I remember correctly), and it hasn't reoccurred since.

Might be worth checking the battery voltage with a multi-meter?

My windows dropped and wouldn't raise when my top's center latch microswitch went out. It's the switch located under the pressure plate where the hook goes in.

Open your top, have a friend poke their finger up in the hole and hold it, turn on your ignition, and see if you can raise your windows.
