Tail light broken, dealer asks 300$
Hey all,
My dealer found out a broken tail light I have which is not covered under warranty. I am looking for a cheaper replacement but I was also wondering if 987 style tail lights fit the 986. Perhaps all red like Cayman Design Edition 1 and RS60 have.... I know the actual tail lights wont directly fit but is there any aftermarket that have made some? Otherwise I would have to replace with OEM. Car is a BoxsterS 2004 tail lights are half red half clear. Thanks! |
aBsOlUt,
Suncoast or Sunset Imports will definitely have an OE replacement for a lot less. There may even be cheaper sources suggested by others. I also believe you can get an all red replacement and any of them are simple to install. What exactly did they find broken? Best of luck. ddb http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=P&Product_Code =kit00004490068&Category_Code=986lights |
Abs,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Porsche dealers, sadly this wont be the last time you are offered anal sex......You might also try LA Dismantlers and ebay.. |

Sheesh I hate Porsche dealership's parts departments and service areas. 200% over retail on many items. Really! Sunset Porsche in Oregon will sell you a replacement lamp for 15% over hard cost. |
+1 for Sunset for a MUCH better price on the OEM replacement. It's an easy install too that you can do yourself. If you don't feel up to it, just take it to a local mechanic. They can install a new light housing in 10 minutes at most using just one tool.
For the aftermarket options check out eBay for your best prices and selection. Kirk |
Just had new deambered lights installed at Suncoast in Sarasota, Florida. $186 for the lights and $50 for installation. I got the half clear and half red lights, but the clear part looks a little smoked. Looks nice. They do sell the all red lights.

They are a simple DIY to replace and plentiful on the net. Here is an example:

I think it still took me less than a half hour. |
Everyone,
Thanks for the responses. It just the right tail light and it has a relatively big crack n the red part. I dont want the rain etc to make it worse so I wanted to replace it quickly. I will consider the online options for sure compared to what my stealer is asking me! Thanks! |
Whatever you do, don't buy the cheap aftermarket tail lights...you'll only be wasting your money. Stick with OEM.

Here are some replace light options:
http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=P&Category_Cod e=986lights I would guess that the $300 price was not that far out-of-line considering parts are about $200. So, they added about $100 for labor. Most labor rates at the dealership exceed $200 per hour. Not cheap, but not completely outrages either, IMHO. |
