Redesigned Boxster Engines?
I just got my Excellence in the mail and read their article on the newly designed 3.6 and 3.8L 9ll engines. It appears that it is a pretty complete redesign, newly cast case halves for the engine case, integrated bearings, 40 fewer parts, direct fuel injection, easier to build, 11 lbs lighter, and more HP and fuel economy.
Does anyone have any word if they are planning a redesign like that for the 2.7 and 3.4 engines or are they just going to add DFI? Ed  |
Ed, not sure about the 2.7 but isn't the main difference between the 3.4 and the 3.6 & 3.8 the bore?
Wow, your car gets great MPG's. I barely get mid 20's. |
I have a kidney for sale. Only $90,000. :D The new 911 is the pinnicle. They seem to have done everything right.

I would expect that the design would 'trickle down' to the Boxster and Cayman. With fuel economy regs set to kick Porsche in the balls, it wouldn't be a bad idea.
DI could increase fuel economy and performance noticeably. Heck, I already get 31-32mpg freeway in my Boxster. I'd bet with some tweaks, 35-38 would probably be do-able. |
all of their flat-6 motors will be based on the new design. it's far cheaper for them to do it that way. supposedly, even the GT3 and Turbo will now use this new block as it's deemed beefy enough.
two wonderful design change: NO intermediate shaft and FOUR head scavenge pumps. |
Sounds like a whole new laundry list of issues is coming... ;)
