Where the ash tray is??? How do you think it could possibly fit in that small of space?

Heh, no. I would remove (using a dremel) the rear dummy window switches. It will fit in length and width, if I remove these, but as others have pointed out, probably not enough depth. I will take a look at it when I pull everything out for the install, but I think I will have to put the center console back in.

I've had my entire console pulled apart whilst moving components around from top to bottom. I also replaced the ash tray with the non-smokers tray. It would be a far fetch to fit the a/c unit in there precisely because of the depth issue.

I agree that I dont think the depth would work. The wiring would be a nightmare and you would essentially be butchering up a Porsche. Reloacating the units and adding a D3 is relatively easy and is reversible but trying to throw the climate contorls to the center console area would just look weird (in my opinion).
